I have a question for the Dover area. I have been living here for about 2 1/2 to 3 years and I have been noticing the color and smell of the water. My children have been breaking out and also health problems. My question is who do you contact to test the water? Even if we don't drink it we have to bathe in it. All parts of the body breaking out in rashes.

there is a high clorine content in middletown water, but there is no peculiar odor, color, and i have not heard anyone complaining of health problems associated with it, or breaking out. i know the water here is tested once a year and all residents receive a report on findings.

i have lived here over five years and have never personally had a problem or heard others in this area expressing a problem with the water. i can't comment personally on dover but i am in that area at least 5-6 times a month, and know many people who live there. water quality has never been a topic of conversation when i have been in the homes of some of my friends there. i'm not saying that some residents of both places don't have water issues. but i think if the problems were very widespread and consistent, i would have heard something by now.

Wilmington water tastes unpleasant to me, as well. When we first moved here I could only stand drinking it with lemon. We drink bottled water in restaurants and at home we have a reverse osmosis filtration system under the kitchen sink that we use for all drinking and cooking purposes. You can, of course, buy bigger systems for whole-house filtration but they are very space-consumming and they aren't as effective as the reverse osmosis systems (a whole-house reverse osmosis system would be prohibitively large and expensive for almost everyone). The under-the-sink reverse osmosis system isn't very pricey (about $500 with installation IIRC) and Schagren/SchagrenGas carries, installs, and offers maintenance on it. Schagren is headquartered in Middletown, though also has some operations in Hockessin and maybe also somewhere downstate. We've been very happy with our system. The filters have to be changed annually and look shocking when they are removed.

I don't consider the City of Wilmington water (which we are on, even though we are outside the City) to be dangerous, but it certainly isn't pleasant tasting.
