My husband will be starting a new job in Wilmington. We need some input on where to live, DE or PA. He would be alright with driving up to 30 minutes to Wilmington.
We are 50 something empty nesters. We like quiet neighborhoods. Easy access to restaurants, shopping, grocery, gym, etc. We have no interest in nightlife, or Philadelphia. We would be renting and would prefer a small/medium size single house over a townhouse. To travel to where our family lives in PA we would probably drive up through West Chester, on to Rt. 202, then onto Rt. 476.
Thank you for your input.

What is your budget? I would recommend Pike Creek (zip code 19808) or North Wilmington in DE. I personally am not a fan of PA.

Our budget is around $1500. What towns are in North Wilmington?

Here's a ZIP code map. http://www.city-data.com/zipmaps/Wil...-Delaware.html. The 19806 ZIP code applies both within the city limits and outside. Otherwise, most of North Wilmington is 19803. It's full of developments with houses built beginning in the post-WWII boom. Colonials, split levels, ranchers, an occasional Cape Cod; not many contemporaries. If you scroll down on that map page, you'll see that the median gross rent for 19803 in 2011 was $1,325.

The main drag through North Wilmington is Concord Pike, US Route 202 (which, as you noted, extends into PA and becomes a limited access highway around West Chester). 202 is lined with shops, restaurants, strip malls, and a traditional mall, Concord Mall. Lots of traffic lights, lots of congestion, but most North Wilmington developments are mere minutes away. Even you settle in the northeasternmost sections of North Wilmington, it's not a half hour from downtown Wilmington except in the worst of traffic conditions.

If you like the city, and convenience, it sounds like the outskirts of Trolley Square / Rockford Park area may interest you. It is very quiet, but convenient and still a 5 minute drive down the road to anything in the city. The homes can be very nice.
