We are thinking about moving to Middletown and will be in town this weekend to get a feel for the town. Any recommendations on where to visit or what to see? Also, what is a great neighborhood for kids? Thanks for any help!

Can't help you, but just thought I'd say that we are in the same boat. We have a few spots in Newark that we are considering, but also considering Middletown. We've made a bunch of trips to Newark, last time went through many others including Middletown...so now we have it narrowed down. I drove around Middletown but have not seriously looked there yet. Next trip will be all Middletown. Good luck!

Middletown is a great area to raise a family. The schools are great, family friendly neighborhoods, restaraunts, shopping, and they have sports in the town. I am not sure what you can "do" when visiting Middletown for a weekend though. You may need to leave Middletown.

middletown is not really a tourist destination. there are places nearby, as one poster suggested, that might be interesting to visit, but they are not in middletown. old town new castle and the historic area of odessa come to mind.

if you are in middletown for the weekend, you might be interested in the dutch family market on north broad st, which sells everything from fried chicken to furniture. it can perhaps entertain for an hour.

the campus of st andrews school- a private school used in the filming of "dead poets society" might be worth a drive through. it is a very attractive campus off of noxontown rd near rt. 71.

otherwise, i think you're going to have to go farther afield in order to see any so-called tourist stops. longwood gardens and winterthur are very lovely in the christmas season but are least 45 min. to an hour away.

in addition to St. Andrews you could park you car on/close to main street. a couple of nice little shops and cafes (purple sage, E, gibby center with a holiday art fair going on).
The everett theater (also got popular due the 'dead poets society). A nice, old fashioned family oriented movie theater with a stage for live shows. you can check online what movies/shows are going on.

overall I agree, Middletown is pretty much a convenient residential area, laid back, and there are tons of families.
as far as I remember, they have the biggest recreational soccer club in the area and pretty good schools compared to other counties in DE.

But - I also have to mention (and I wish I would have done more research before our move) that Middletown in in close proximity to a nuclear plant ( at least they provide residents with emergency medication) and has an overall high cancer rate.

we have had several other threads regarding this subject, if you are interested in that matter.
as I said, I wish, I would have gotten this information earlier.

middletown itself is a great town, we made many friends, loved all the kids there, were very happy with our school, had an actually downtown with some happenings and always met friends everywhere.
but to me personally it did not make up for the health concerns.

don't think I am allowed to put in the link, so google and compare Middletowns 'health' to other cities. sad, but true.

I sometimes feel bad I am always mentioning that - but every coin has two sides and I don't think, people talk about those facts often enough at all. lots of folks rave about Delaware due it's great location and no sales taxes (we now pay sales taxes and this for sure sometimes stinks ) it all depends on what you want for yourself and your family. sometimes jobs don't give you options, but if this is not a concern, I would look somewhere else.

If you are unfamiliar with the overall area of southern New Castle County, I would also recommend a drive over to Odessa and a look at its historic area. It isn't at all far from Middletown and later this month the new/old Cantwell's Tavern in old Odessa may finally be open.

O, forgot about that. the historic houses in odessa (2 miles down the road from Middletown) are well worth a visit. there are tours available, too. "christmas in Odessa" has already passed, I think.

I believe it's open now! My neighbor drove past it yesterday and said there's a sign out front that they're open. I'm excited to check it out.
