I took one day trip to New Castle, specifically went to the Walmart and looked all around exactly where you are talking about. Personally, I didn't like it there....but like you say....coming from NY it is still a step up as far as being "bad". I think in the current housing market you might possibly get a small 3 bedroom in that area for around 100-120 if you make a real offer and have the money. I am looking at homes around $200K and under in Newark where even a year ago these homes were out of my price range. Things have really come down. You may also want to consider Brookside near the college.....similar price ranges, maybe a decent 3br for $130. Good luck.
Thank you so much for your reply. I'm a Bronx girl myself, I work there now. Yeah, most people living on Burnside Ave and the Grand Concourse would love to have a place in Wilton behind the Walmart, lol. I lived in Queens and Long Island (Floral Park) for a good part my life too. When you say college are you referring to U of D in Newark? Is there a particular intersection I can look up so that I know I'm in Brookside? Thanks again for the suggestions

Yes University of Delaware. I don't really know what encompasses Brookside other than it is the area around the college. If you go to Googlemaps and search for Brookside, DE the general area does come up. I think the better areas were around Rt. 4 if I remember correctly, but it's not the only one. Again, not a "great" area but not Burnside/Grand Concourse either. I grew up off Baychester Ave., across the Highway from Co-op City, moved about an hour out on LI near Stony Brook in 1997. Still have family in The Bronx, in fact will be there for Christmas. My kids are grown, one lives in DC. We are trying to get closer to him AND find a cheaper place to live. DE seems to fit the bill nicely. Good luck in your search...if I see anything specific I will let you know. Don't hesitate to write me directly if you have any questions or anything.
