It's open!! I just drove across it last night on my way home from Rehoboth--only southbound lanes will cross the new bridge right now with northbound traffic still using the old bridge. It sure is a rather tall bridge with quite a spectacular view. The bridge lights are not installed yet, but they'll be operating soon. I am LOVING the fact it has a very roomy (and much safer!) bike lane. I crossed the old bridge on my bike once, and once was enough for me. Scary. This new bridge has a much safer and more user friendly bike/pedestrian lane.

Thumbs up to Skanska, George and Lynch, and everyone else involved with the bridge's construction and the old bridge's future demolition . Has anyone else crossed over the new bridge? Thoughts? Opinions??

Hallelujah! Can't wait to drive it later this year when it is fully open. Been waiting and waiting. Even though it doesn't terribly affect us up here in Upper DE, it's a beautiful bridge, should offer a great view (like its cousin over the C&D canal) and will certainly make things more convenient on those occasions when we venture farther south than Rehoboth on the coastal hwy (it might even make it more likely that we would do).

It is a very attractive bridge, for sure. My husband and I rode our bikes up that way and watched them build the bridge quite a few times this year. It was really neat to see it up close and personal. My husband knows more about bridges and their construction than I do; therefore, he was really into it and often "predicted" what they would do next. We both found the heavy machinery quite impressive too!

It also represents a hopefully successful conclusion to what was a rather embarrassing project characterised by cost over-runs and serious construction problems earlier on. It will be good to close this chapter -- again, one would hope "happily ever after".

Yes, Liz....it is a nice one. Should be, huh?
Well, we're 4 for 4, since it opened Saturday. Our 4th trip over the bridge being today. And guess what? Today was such a beautiful day, that it brought out all the visitors and future vacationers looking for their summer rentals. Already!

Northbound and southbound lanes are open now, with only one lane open in each direction. Demolition of the old bridge is next!

That bridge carries a lot of traffic, especially during the summer! Two lanes in either direction are certainly needed. Have you not been down to that part of the state during the summer?

The new bridge is certainly higher than its predecessor. The effects of water, weather, and erosion all take their toll -- a bridge with modern engineering and construction was badly needed. It's actually a very problematic location.

A big bridge is needed there. You'd be amazed how much traffic goes over it.
