I am coming down to Delaware in March to go house-hunting, mostly in the Dover area. I will be taking Amtrak down and probably staying in Wilmington overnight, then renting a car the next day and heading to Dover. I looked in the AAA book for lodgings in Wilmington and narrowed my choices down to these four locations. I will not name the hotels, as I think that is not allowed. One is in the 5200 block of Concord Pike, near Naamans Rd.; it has outside corridors. The next is on US 202, adjacent to Concord Shopping Mall. Next is at King and 7th St., downtown and finally one in the 4000 block of Concord Pike. How are these areas safety-wise? I am a senior, traveling alone and will probably have to walk outside to get something to eat after arriving. The one in the 5200 block of Concord Pike has the lowest room rate. Also, how convenient are any of these locations to the train station? I would almost certainly be taking a cab from the train station. Thanks for any info!

The only location that is convenient to the railway station is the downtown location. There's no problem by the way with giving the names of businesses other than real estate agents/agencies. The hotels on Concord Pike are in a completely different part of town than the railway station and in fact aren't within the proper City of Wilmington at all (rather, suburban area known as "North Wilmington"). You should be fine downtown, although I would advise against wandering far. You might wish to eat at your hotel, as the number of restaurants downtown is limited. You would find more moderately priced restaurants on Concord Pike, but it is a 6 lane highway essentially and you would be on the wrong side of the road for a lot of the places. There is a Marriott Courtyard located just a block off Concord Pike and immediately behind a whole row of modestly priced restaurants, however. Still, that isn't at all close to the train station. The Doubletree Hotel, which is almost immediately adjacent to Concord Mall, would also afford you a couple of places to eat at this rather second-rate mall (the main shopping mall is entirely outside of town, located adjacent to I-95 and DE Rt 1 -- you will see that when you drive down to Dover, though there are currently a lot of roadworks going on that make the area around Christiana Mall somewhat nightmarish).

Thanks for the good advice. I did not know about Concord Pike being a 6-lane highway. I think I will consider the downtown area. I will be getting in late, and leaving the next morning, so it is just basically a place to sleep for one night.

Thanks again!

Default Dover Downs Hotel is running Special 39.00 a night

I live in Dover Delaware but just recently a bunch of friends and I stayed at Dover Downs. Thru Feb 16th the price per night was only 29.00 a night but now I hear they are charging 39.00 a night. Sunday thru Thurs. Great deal for a 4 star Hotel and wonderful places to eat without leaving the hotel. And if you can please go to the Fire and Ice show on Thursday night.......our friend Bob does a wonderful Elvis Show. Enjoy!

Delaware is a wonderful place to live and I also have a friend selling their beautiful home if you are interested.

retiree2011 - I see you are coming from CT via Amtrak. We did Amtrak coming down from ME 2 years ago when we were house hunting. What time are you coming into Wilmington? I ask this because if its early enough for you, you might want to pick up your car and head to Dover straight away. Dover isn't that far from the station, perhaps 35-40 minutes at the most. The car rental place across from the station closes at 7PM - promptly! We got in at 6:30-ish, got our car, and was on our way south in no time. Now I know you are researching Wilmington for the night and I don't mean to sidetrack you, just wanted you to consider driving to Dover if your train arrives early enough and you feel up to it after the trip. Happy travels!

P.S. We have seen the Elvis show at the Dover Downs Hotel and it is FANTASTIC!

If you hit Dover Downs at the right time, rooms are cheap! Much cheaper than the hotel/motels along the Rt. 13 strip, and so much nicer!

Thanks to everyone for this info. The hotels at the 2 casinos here are very expensive, so I wasn't even considering Dover Downs. Plus, look at all there is to do there! Probably wouldn't sleep much.
