Default Health Care in Delaware

I couldn't find the original topic on Delaware heath care and was thinking today how satisfied we are with our doctors, hospital, dentist and eye care in the Dover area.

Knowing a lot of retiree's that have moved or planning to move from other states, this is a very important issue that could be up for discussion.

Being a Delaware resident for 5 years now, I can safely say with the utmost confidence we are very satisfied.
All of our neighbors in the 55+ community are as well.

I just can't say enough with our experiences about how thorough our doctors, dentist, eye care physicians, specialist and hospital.

When I first moved here, it was scary the negativity about Delaware health care and feel the need to share our experience after being here 5 years.

It would be nice for some of you to share your experiences as well.

When we moved full time to Delaware over 20 years ago we moved to Laurel. My son who is graduating from High School was born in Nanticoke Hosp. Not too long after he was born we moved to Long Neck and have been here ever since. We have been very happy with available medical care on both sides of the state. I'm not real happy with the eye doctor/eyeglass place that has many locations and heavily advertises on TV but we easily found one we love.

We moved here 9 months ago and recently had our first checkups at an office in Dover. We are extremely pleased with the entire service. I'll be seeing a rheumatologist next week so I'll post again after that service.

This is great to hear! Any comments on the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes?

I've always seen doctors in Delaware and never had a problem. Well, other than my husband's Ocean View dermatologist who was shut down--again. But anyway....all of my doctors are in either Lewes or Millville, and I think they are top notch. Now, I don't have any ongoing health issues and can only speak for my primary doctor, my gyno, and two surgeons, but I'd say 37 years without any complaints is pretty reassuring .

Regarding Beebe: excellent care here always. I had two knee surgeries there over 20 years ago and received great care. I have bad reactions to anesthesia, and they were able to successfully deal with my blood pressure plummeting immediately. I also had my son there in 1995 and had minor abdominal surgery there (outpatient) in 2003. I have visited their ER as well and never had any issues. I think Beebe is a wonderful hospital.

I know this conversation is about doctors and hospitals, but, what about insurance plans accepted by these doctors and hospitals?

If you are not on a company insurance plan and retiring to Delaware - any advice? Assuming you are retired and on Medicare, any experience with the best supplmental insurance or Medicare advantage plans offered in Delaware? It seems like there are far fewer insurance companies authorized to operate in Delaware compared to PA where I am now.

Beebe is an excellent hospital. In addittion to the main downtown hospital they have an outpatient center just off Rt1 between Lewes and Rehoboth which offers tests ,xrays and sameday surgery. Also they have several lab facilites spread around the area. There is also the Tunnell Cancer Center which is located by the Outpatient Center. Not Beebe but it may interest you to know that in Sussex County we have Paramedic units responding in addittion to the ambulances in emergency calls.
As an area resident I have had no complaints with medical care in this area.

Same in Kent County......paramedics in addition to ambulances here. I don't know how Delaware's health care compares to other states, because I've always been here. I just know we think Delaware's health care is awesome! We think we have great medical service, and more than competent doctors/surgeons We've never had a problem with Medicare or supplemental insurance, either.

Like rdlr, I don't have a clue as far as how Delaware's health care compares to other states since I have always lived here, but I can say that my parents moved to Virginia's eastern shore and they don't have any trouble with doctors accepting their Delaware Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance which my mother had (and kept) once she retired from working for the state of Delaware. My mother does say that she misses the health care in Delaware and believes we have better doctors here.

I have pretty much always had insurance provided through the state of DE since my mother worked for the state when I was growing up and now my husband and I both work for the state. Many people in my area (most, actually) are transplants from PA, VA, DC, NJ, and NY and they don't seem to have any problems finding doctors who accept their health care plan.
