Thanks so much for the info. I will be taking a trip out there next week and now I have a couple places I definetely have to look. Thanks again

I grew up in The Bronx, and currently live on Long Island....I am moving to DE hopefully soon. I have a disabled daughter and there are a few lose ends we are waiting for as far as her school and a few other things...but we are almost ready. Anyway...I have made 5 or 6 trips to DE already. As a NYC person I can tell you that in my opinion you will find Newark a nice compromise. Slower than Queens, but not dead. Lots of close shopping, busses, etc. Similar to Queens on a quieter and smaller scale. We have been all over Delaware...Middletown would probably be my second choice, but I think it was a bit too slow moving for me there, I suspect you may find it that way too (I'd compare MT to some Northern areas of Westchester). In Newark you can find an area walking distance to a lot of stores and businesses. I would avoid Brookside. I liked most of the areas North of 95 and along Route 4, near 273...Within a radius of a few miles of Christiana hospital. Just one NY'ers opinion. Good luck.

But is that "part of Newark" actually part of Newark? The advantages to being in Newark would have to do with the college town/little city amenities and demographics. When you get out in the unincorporated suburbs like Bear, I'm not sure you can accurately call it Newark anymore. Middletown itself would offer more of a small town community feel to it, likely the youngest families overall due to the ongoing new housing development, and arguably easier driving proximity to the points of interest south (the beaches, etc). This, of course, gets to the fact that you have to consider the qualities and location of specific neighborhoods within the suburban and exurban sprawl that is northern Delaware.

My husband and I moved here in January from Manhattan. We really love it here. We are in our 30's with no kids (yet) and we chose Middletown. We are renting for now to see if Middletown is the place for us and we really love it here. The schools are great and we are paying $1395 for a 3 bedroom townhouse in Willow Grove Mill development. That sounds a little out of your price range, but our townhouse is very nice. There are definitely a couple of rental developments that are more affordable in town. I think one is called Middletown Village - I could be wrong - it's on the other side of town from us. I agree with the above comments, Newark is younger and there is more to do. Look in both town to see what you like.

My mailing address is Newark, and I'm only about a 15-minute drive from Main Street. Being north of the canal also puts us closer to the shopping opportunities in Christiana.

I just want to say when looking at Newark, look at living within the distance requirement for Newark Charter. You can apply to put your child in there. It is a great school. It may take several years to get him in. I have heard good things about Gallagher Elementary and Downes Elementary in Newark. Good Luck.

Thanks, whereshome. I wasn't familiar with the charter school but Gallagher and Downes were actually the two schools im looking at. I'm looking for apartments within those areas.

... how was your trip down to Delaware ? I'm also looking to move to that area, I have never been to Delaware. Currently living in Pa for the last 20 yrs, and just need to get off the mountain. Also looking to rent 2/3 bedroom. Where did you stay when you visited and for how long did you stay ... just asking so I can get an idea for myself .. I'm pretty much doing this by myself, Hubby had a severe stroke 2 yrs ago.
