Shootings at Delaware State University
Two students were shot at Delaware State University early Friday and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said. Classes were canceled for the day.
A male student was hospitalized in stable condition, and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious, according to a news release on the university's Web site.
The students were shot near Memorial Hall around 1 a.m., the news release said.
Police hoped to find out more information once the victims were able to talk. "We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, and that's probably a big reason why the suspect is still at large," university spokesman Carlos Holmes told KYW-TV.
Students, faculty and staff were instructed to stay in their buildings until further notice, the news release said. Those not on campus were being told not to go there.

Charley, I saw this on the News Journal site this morning. They didn't have this much info printed when I saw it....just that there was a shooting, and the campus was in lock down mode.
This is tragic.

It is tragic and also a little scary. During the summer, there were three DSU students killed in Newark, New Jersey. I have no idea if there is any connection between the two events.
I've been to DSU during my visits to the area and it's a nice quiet little campus. My wife and I visited the bookstore and got some DSU T-shirts. It's so hard to believe that the quiet little campus we saw has seen such violence today.

Charley, I lived within walking distance of this campus in Dover.
This is going to be an extremely difficult weekend for the authorities in Dover this weekend. I forgot it's race weekend there. I'm not in DE right now. Many thousands of people descend on the area for the week. It's one huge party. There is a lot of alcohol, public drunkenness, voiding in the streets, etc. Certainly not everyone behaves this one, but it only takes a few to make the experience disgusting for the locals. The track is across the street from DSU campus, but race goers are all over the area.
The race argument is already rearing its ugly head on the News Journal site. Sadly, this will turn into an argument about groups of people and supposed innate behaviors. Hopefully, the perp will be found very soon and held accountable without finger pointing in regard to the amount of melanin in their skin.

Unfortunately race rears it's ugly head about everything. I was so hoping we'd be past that kind of garbage by now but maybe we never will be.
It's so strange. When we started wearing the DSU shirts, we started to get some very strange looks. We thought that maybe people thought it was weird that we wore shirts from schools we never attended. Then we found out that DSU started as an all-black college, "The State College for Colored Students" and that may have explained some of the looks.
Guess what! We still wear the shirts and continue to do so ... and when I heard the news today, I put on one of my shirts as my own little expression for peace on the campus!

LOL........Struck me funny.
Seriously, I did not know that DSU was an all black college. Don't whites go there now?
Anyway, race week is a pain in the butt. We experienced our first in May and learned not to venture north on 13 in Dover.
We will stay right here till it is over.
It is not just DSU but all colleges have to be wary with violence on campus.
Look at Columbine, VA tech and so on.
What happened in Newark was tragic but at least they got the nuts that did this.
all schools and colleges have to be extra vigilant these days.
something will happen that is for sure but no one knows where or when. But every year something happens that make s the news on a campus somewhere in the country or the world.
It is scary and what to do is to take extra secure measures.

We live just a few miles from DSU, and are saddened by this news. They're saying that a news conference is scheduled for 11:30 this morning.
Charley, yes, it is a quiet campus. We've heard of nothing like this during our 14 years here, and our family who've been here as long as 30 years say the same.
Delaware State was founded about 117 years ago--historically a black college. My family member tells me that for more than 30 years, the student population has been about half black / half white, though many white students commute. It's a small university, about 3000 students. The large majority of the c. 200 professors have their Ph.D.'s.
DSU has brought some wonderful speakers, writers, poets, musicians, etc., to campus over the years, and many in the community have enjoyed this ongoing contribution.
So sorry to hear about this, and I hope the students, faculty, staff, heal quickly.

Folks,
The only think I can say about prejudice is this: No one is born prejudiced; and a blind man knows no prejudice.

I've tried to teach my kids that there are no differences between people. I think I've succeeded. I would have hoped that those who grew up in the same generation in which I did would have done the same with their kids. Looks like we failed.

In the interest of clarity, although I think the current posters here know what we are talking about, the use of 'race weekend' means that the NASCAR group is in town. I meant nothing about ethnic heritage. I thought I'd add that as a quick aside. Dover doesn't need any more problems than they already have this weekend.
