Hi everyone
I might be offered a job in newark delaware shortly and I just wanted to do my homework before the due date for the decision is upon me. I have a special needs three year old who is diagnosed with mild to moderate autism. We are currently in NYC where she attends a full day special Ed program five days a week. Does DE have good special Ed programs? Any personal experience with them? Can I, as an alternative, live in glen mills and commute to newark everyday and my DD could go to school in glen mills? Are glen mills special schools as good as mainstream? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also have job options in Harrisburg PA and Bridgeport CT.

I don't have any info regarding the Glen Mills area or their schools (I live down in Sussex at the beach), but I am a secondary level special education teacher in Delaware and I teach for the Indian River School District. Delaware is one of the best states as far as their special education programs are concerned. Their teachers are held to high expectations and constant training and knowledge of the most modern teaching methods and technology is mandatory, at least in my district.

I don't know anyone who has a child is any special education programs up in northern Delaware, but it appears most parents I have encountered in southern Delaware are satisfied with the quality of education (and accommodations) their child receives in Delaware special education programs. Hope this helps you....

Thanks beachliz! That was very informative. And coming from a teacher it means a lot. Are there pure special Ed classrooms?

You're welcome. Yes, there are self-contained classrooms for special ed only--I teach in a few of these given I am a "roving" special ed teacher. There are also classrooms called intensive learning centers--ILC--for the special ed students who cannot handle changing classes or trying to mainstream into regular ed classrooms even with the support of both the regular ed and special ed teacher (or they cannot follow the regular ed curriculum). There is typically one ILC in each school and a couple special ed only classes depending on the school and grade levels. These classrooms are available in elementary, middle, and high schools. Cape Henlopen District has the Consortium, which is available to all students in Sussex and serves mostly autistic students.

I would move to PA. I think it is easier to gain access to services in PA, having been a PA and DE resident. You may have an easier time getting services since your daughter will be coming in with an IEP. That being said, I had a much easier time gaining services (and more of them) for my child in PA. Take a serious look at Glen Mills. I think you will be happy with the special ed services there.
