We had a 3 1/2 visit yesterday afternoon. I think among the 4 of us (myself, dh, db, & s-i-l who is a nurse), we asked just about every question there is. Also, we had a terrific tour of the whole facility, looking at independent living apts, assisted living, and the memory-impaired section. Everything looked very nice, clean, and the folks had happy smiles. We were touring around dinner time. I had a chance to talk to one of the residents in the dining room about the food. They said usually it's pretty good. I imagine as with all institutions, it can get to be the same after awhile.
They also have a varied activity program with something going on all the time. There is a little bus they use to take groups to the theater, concerts, shopping, doctors, and so on. Mom won't be driving herself anywhere, so I don't have to worry about her out in traffic. I'll be taking her lots of places, and traffic doesn't bother me.
I asked about the railroad tracks. The representative said that it bothers some people, but not others. All depends on what you get used to, I suppose. I used to live across from Reagan National Airport and next to noisy air force bases, and after awhile, we didn't notice planes taking off anymore. I also asked about hum from the power lines and got a blank look. LOL!
We took lots of pictures so we can show Mom when we see her. I know this won't be the last place we look at, but it is a good start. The next step will be to bring her up here from Florida for an overnight visit in one of the cottages.
Thanks to all for their input. It was helpful to have information prior to the viist. When I asked about the railroad, etc., my brother asked me if I had an inside source.
