This past tax season, my wife and I filed our 2012 DE State tax returns on-time back in the spring of 2013.
The tax returns were no more complicated than previous years.

In October, we received a notice that we should expect our return. The following week,
the funds were deposited via direct deposit (specified in our return) to our bank.

In the past, it typically had not taken 6 months to receive our tax refund and
we were curious why it took so much longer this most recent season.

Anyone else experience something similar?

Were we subjected to increase scrutiny?

Did DE department of revenue have decreased staff or increased
workload?

At first I thought that the delay was because we were selected for an audit.
I am not afraid of an audit as I always have ample documentation supporting
every deduction etc.

I am just more curious.

Thank you in advance.

My tax refund was also quite delayed, though not by six months. However, allegedly the first cheque they cut and supposedly sent went missing in the mail and I had to spend a great deal of time on the phone talking to various people at the Division of Revenue to get the supposed cheque cancelled and a new one sent. One person I spoke with kept saying, "they're so behind this year". I don't think the Division of Revenue is the most efficient department in the State.
