Hi everyone,

Great forum!

I'm chilean, work in IT and living in Santiago, Chile. I'm evaluating an offer to go to work to Delaware, and I need to get all the facts prior of taking a decision, since this is a big one for me and my family. I have not received any proposal yet but I basically want to know about income taxes (which I believe is a lot more than here), how expensive are the health plans, which areas are good to live in (the job would be in Newark). I'm guessing a budget of 1000-1400 for rent.

And what is it like to live there? is it fun? what type of activities are common over there? sports? night life?.
Any information would be great

Thanks!

Compared to Santiago? Small, provincial, probably boring for you. I like Delaware, but I'm realistic about it.

At least Philly is a short drive from Wilmington if the OP wants a bigger night live scene.

Well, you have to remain pretty restrained in partaking of nightlife in Philly if you are going to drive back to Delaware safely, don't you? Either that or you have to stay over in the city, or have a sober driver.

The Wilmington area is great for a married 60 year old such as myself. We even moved here from a great world city (London). But if you are young, I wouldn't want to move here from a major city with so much more going for it.

If you are married with children it might be ok. The beaches in the southern part of the State are a big draw. The Atlantic beach towns of Rehoboth and Bethany are especially good for families. There's a good deal of history in this little state, always interesting and enjoyable to see. The sports teams that are followed are mostly those in Philadelphia. There are various festivals around the State at different times. I personally find Winter here rather boring and confining. There are good rail connections to NYC and DC, but public transportation within the State is badly lacking. There is much natural beauty, history, and sweetness in Delaware, but it is not a dynamic, happening place. Still, I do choose to live here, don't I?

Boring and confining depends on what your interests are. There are some who find hiking through the woods a great pass time. As doctorjef says there are a lot of festivals. If kids are involved youth sports can be very exciting.

Thanks for the response!

The job would be in Newark. Actually I don't mind it to be more calm and provincial as said, as long as we find an area with good schools and safe, since my wife and I are planning to have kids over there Also being relatively close to NYC, DC, Philly for ex. is nice.

My concern is the amount of taxes paid over there.
Is this page below accurate?

Paycheck Calculator, Free Payroll Calculators, Paycheck Calculator 2014, Online Payroll For America

And what about the health plans? Is it health expensive?

Thanks again guys.

The federal taxes you pay will depend upon what you claim on your W-4 which is dependent upon your income and how many children you have. I don't know if they have it up yet but you can go on irs.gov and figure out what your taxes would be for the year. I would think there would be something similar for state taxes but I don't remember.

There is no sales tax/VAT in Delaware. Property taxes - if you were to buy a house - are low compared to many other states, and certainly as compared to other states in this part of the US. Delware's own state income tax is at about the median compared to all other states that impose a state income tax.

Will your health insurance be provided by your employer? If so, I wouldn't worry about healthcare costs too much.
