Has anyone else failed the eyescreening??? Can you tell me what the process was with the certification that your opthamologist or optometrist submitted to DMV?

Thanks.

Shy from either passing or failing the eye test at the DMV, I don't know the proceedure re: an Eye Dr. turning in any info to the DMV. I do know that in 5 years when I have to renew my license, I will most likely fail the eye test if they ask me to read the bottom (the smallest) line.

I somehow passed the DMV vision test when I moved here, despite needing corrective lenses. I mean I took the vision test without my glasses and passed. My ophthamologist said that my vision was definitely too poor to pass the DMV criterion and I'm sure he was correct about that. I don't know if I somehow managed to guess correctly on lines I couldn't read clearly or if the person behind the counter who was dealing with my license application was simply careless. Very odd.

Wondermom, You take the test at the DMV, your eye doctor is not involved. Frankly, I like the idea of the all drivers either wearing their contacts or glasses if they need them. If you fail the test you get glasses or contacts and take it again.

To read small print I need glasses, but have so far always read the chart fast without and got a pass.
One dm person did ask if I had glasses, yes so he said ok. He did say if he made glasses on the renewal
and I did not have them it would be costly for me. Next year once more I do need to renew with or
without glasses! I was told in the renew you need not small print vision but distance which I have.
After 30 the tiny print gets hard to see why readers to read!

Dexter123,

If your vision was truly 20/40 you should have been able to read the eye chart line necessary to get you regular license. So, if you don't wear glasses you need to see an eye doctor for prescription lens to use when driving. If you already have glasses you need to get you prescription updated.

If you wear glasses and the prescription is the best it can be - your corrected vision is 20/50 or worse and they don't want you driving at night.

So, when was the last time you had your eyes checked by an eye doctor?

I got a new prescription of this year I want to the dmv yesterday and I couldn't see the letters or numbers and I told the person that give me my vision test is 20/40 vision and he give me this slip to give to my eye doctor and he told me to get the slip filled out and bring it back im 20/40 in the left eye. I read the eye test requirements it says if your vision is 20/40 your granted for daylight driving only.

Dexter,

So, can I assume from your statement that you only have vision in one eye? I had no problem reading the second line of the chart which I thought was 20/40 ( with the top line 20/50). But, I could be mistaken. I know I don't have 20/20 because my left eye's vision changes shape slightly from morning to night. The doctor will try to give me something in between so that it gives me 20/40 vision in that eye most of the time. Of course my right eye does compensate for the issues I have with my left eye.

If you could not read any of the lines at the DMV, I would go back to your doctor and have him/her check your glasses to be sure they filled your prescription correctly. If so, get a new eye exam, your eye could have had a sudden change. Perhaps a cataract has developed.

If you really can no longer see the letters on the eye chart and corrective lens can not correct for that, it may be the best thing for you and others on the road if you do not drive at night. I think the DMV will need your doctor to fill out the form after a new eye test result to determine if it is safe for you to drive.
