My wife and I have been looking at properties to purchase in Sussex county sometime now. About a year ago I heard a rambling comment about extensive pollution issues but never got the full details and chalked it up to old Dupont factories etc. However, I came across this article that concerns me. Relatively recent pollution from a power plant on the Indian river. The amount of very dangerous pollutants in the ground, in the Indian River and the lack of clean up concerns me. There just seems to be a lack of concern leaving me to think raising a fuss may disrupt the real estate market in that area. Citizens seem very concerned and the fact (if it is) locals do not eat fish or crab from the river. Any advice or opinion on this subject, thanks!

I have been living in the area over 20 years. Raised a son here. I walk my dogs along the bay regularly year around. Those of us who live here love it. When we have guests or care to swim ourselves we use the pool not the bay beach although it is quite popular.

So what is your take on the article I provided? I've been visiting Delaware for 50 years, never lived there but live nearby (2 hours). Just a little concerned about the amount of poison that power plant left behind, or supposed to of. Barium is very deadly, nothing to fool with. I'm hoping its not serious or end up becoming worse or perhaps its really nothing to worry about.

I've heard stuff about cancer clusters and such and I've only lived here a few years (yay me) but my In laws have been on the Indian River Bay for 15 years, not as long as Longnecker and they haven't had any issues. I think wildlife including fish tells us a lot, I've caught plenty of normal Flounder in the bay, the ducks and Canada geese come here by the 1000's, to sit and feed in the water, thinking about it, a lot more than the Rehoboth Bay. Hmmm. I'm not a scientist but that's the best I can offer.
