Hi,

I am new to the area and have family coming to visit for the holiday season. I was thinking that it would be nice to take them to Longwood Gardens to see the holiday display and lunch. My neighbor told me that there are complimentary or discounted tickets but wasn't sure where to find them. Does anyone here know where to find them?

Complimentary tickets are distributed to volunteers and staff members, who usually give them to friends and family. I'm not aware of any comp tickets available to the general public. There are some discounts: "Longwood offers discounted rates for members of the military, groups, students (ages 5–18, or any age with valid student ID), and seniors (ages 62+). " From the Longwood Website.

There are occasionally Groupon deals for Longwood admission, but they would be for slower times of the year. Christmas is the most crowded time all year (plus Mother's Day), and Longwood doesn't need to discount tickets to get a capacity crowd.

Although the price may seem high, the holiday display is spectacular and well worth it. You can easily spend 4-5 hours touring the grounds and the conservatory.

A Longwood Christmas is spectacular, but you will probably need to order tickets online and will have a definite admission date and time. It has been quite a while since I have been there, and at that time anyone could just walk up, get tickets, and walk in. I think those days are over.

You're correct, SXM Girl. Timed tickets are required for the whole holiday season.

In addition, if you want to eat at the fancier restaurant, 1906, reservations are absolutely essential. The other choice is a cafeteria-style restaurant, and I suspect there may be lines at peak times.

Longwood defines peak times as every Saturday and Sunday during the Christmas display, and also the whole week between Christmas and New Year's. We drive by the entrance frequently, and I was surprised to see last Sunday that they were showing tickets were available for that afternoon.

As it gets closer to Christmas, traffic can get seriously backed up at the entrance, so you need to factor that into your travel time.
