Thanks for your responses. Our home is scheduled to be completed in mid of Feburary. I'm thinking that maybe a front porch ceiling fan might not be a bad idea for summer heat. But what about weather issues like rain and snow? The fan is not completely out of the elements.

The fan on our screened in back porch is still going strong after 7 years, which is better than some of our indoor fans have fared through the years. Because the ceiling is solid it doesn't get any direct moisture from rain or snow, but it is still in an unheated outdoor area subject to fog, humidity, etc.

Would highly recommend that you get a good quality ceiling fan that is rated for outdoors (or indoor/outdoor). You can find them at any retailer that sells ceiling fans (e.g. Home Depot, Lowes, etc.).

As stated above there are fans that are specifically designed for indoor or outdoor use, not necessarily direct rain but indirect weather. have one in a gazebo in northern Michigan that's been working for 20 plus years. Definitely helps on warm humid evenings.

Big Ass Fans ... yes its a brand name (known for large industrial warehouse fans). Has started doing residential fans they have specialized blade designs that move more air; not cheap but very high quality. I'm not sure if they have "outdoor" applications, but their websites worth checking out.

There are a lot of houses here along the Chesapeake with porch fans (mine being one such). Your concern about the elements is good, there are fans made for outdoor use. They are a bit more expensive.

If your porch is a three season porch the weather proofed fan is not such a big issue.

Default Good news

I spoke with the builder and we added the fan at no additional cost. The fan is specifically made for outdoor use. He explained about how it was encased and was protected from the weather. There is no way I could relay that oh so out of my area conversation. So I guess all u can do is welcome us to the community of out door fans. We will let you know how it goes.
