I was thinking more in terms of live music, but maybe the OP is not interested in music. Thinking back to 1958, when we were having fun in Rehoboth Beach, I don't remember there being any live bands in ice cream shops.

You will be seeing the main production brewery for DFH in Milton. They do have a tasting room there along with a shop for swag and beer. As others have said take the drive to Rehoboth. DFH has a its main brewpub close to the beach. That is also where they brew the experimental stuff and everything that is on tap at the production brewery will be on tap at the beach along with more choices. For beer drinking the brew pub in Rehoboth will have more and rare choices.

I'm mainly interested in meeting locals, and getting to know how people are different/same all around the U.S. and yes, drinking does make that easier

You might like Irish Eyes in Lewes and also in Milton, for socializing. Decent food, too. Might be crowded (maybe more fun) if you go during St. Patrick's Day week or weekend.
