I am getting close to a job offer in New Castle, DE.
My family and I would be moving from North/Central NJ.
We have 4 young children (ages 7 to 11) and are looking at settling in the Middletown area.
We recently read that they are considering building a power plant in the area and have also read online
that this section of DE may have higher rates of cancer (radon issues ?).
We also saw that there seems to have be some improvement with this issue over the last few
years.

We would appreciate any feedback that you folks could provide.
We really love the area and are hoping to make this happen.

Thanks in advance.

As I understand it, radon mitigation is handled by ventilation.

When buying a home, you pay for an inspection. Add in the radon test.
If the test comes up above spec, then negotiate the seller add in radon
mitigation.

A fan and vent pipe is not terribly major modification to include.
There are radon mitigation specialists that serve delaware.

We currently live (and previously lived) in Northern Ocean Co. NJ but had lived in Middletown, DE from 2009-2014. Regarding your health/safety concerns:

There is a refinery in Delaware City that produces heavy crude. Although it is not in Middletown we could occasionally smell it. There have been some leaks that had been deemed "safe". We would often catch an odor from the refinery when crossing the Route 1 bridge.

There are proposed plans in the works for a power plant. For information I would suggest checking out the Middletown Transcript (local weekly newspaper).

Some areas of MOT fall within a range of the Salem Nuclear Plant which is locate in NJ. The town provides iodine tablets for those residents.

Del DOT has ongoing plans to expand/change Route 301. I would suggest researching the map and plans on their website as well as in the Transcript.

There is a Facebook page - MOT Residents which you can join to read the comments from "locals".

Depending where you may live in the MOT some or none of these issues could be a concern.
