Hi everyone. My husband and I are in the process of moving from NYC to Lewes De. Lately I've been getting cold feet because I'm afraid of not having things to do with the kids (ages 5 and 3) in the off season. Has anyone made the move from NY to DE with little kids? If so please share your experience with me. And anyone who has kids that has lived in DE please share any insight on the activities for kids. Up here in NY we do play dates a lot at either a bouncy place or a trampoline park or even just a chuckie cheese but I'm not finding those things in Sussex county, except for a bouncy place in rehoboth. I'm so nervous because I don't know what to expect. I also hope there are a lot of people around my age (35) to get to know. Again, any insight will be appreciated. Thank you!!!

I am a former NY'er albeit a retiree. You are needlessly worried. There is plenty to do here with kids.

Sounds to me like you haven't looked around very much.

OP - if your kids don't yet know how to swim - sign them up for swim lessons at the Y. If you and your husband can't swim - take adult swim lessons at the Y! ( I had a real fear of the water and finally took adult lessons at a local Y when I was 50. One of the best decisions of my life.)

Also, with a 3 and 5 year old, your husband has an excuse to build sand castles, fly kites and go beach combing to look for shells and pebbles. As long as he has the kids with him he gets to do these things without looking out of place.

I think your family will love Lewes - and the parking near the beach is free in the off season.

Thank you all for the replies. I did some research and found some things that are similar to what we have here in NY. All of those things some of you mentioned are things we love to do but are limited here in NY for many reasons. We are water people through and through. We love swimming, the beach, fishing, flying kites etc so to know that's like normal loving down there makes me feel much better. I have to stop listening to the negative comments from people up here about us moving. We can not wait for our house to be built so we can move already!!!!

Many have no idea what we truly have to offer. Some of course do and are just plain jealous.

I haven't been there in years, but my parents owned a shorehouse in Bethany. We'd go in the off-season, and there was always plenty for me to do, even 30 years ago with half the stuff closed up.

Before it gets into full-on winter, there's Assateague Island to hike around - I loved that place.
