Rehoboth debates banning canopies from beach | Cape Gazette

Rehoboth Beach officials say canopies lined up on the beach are causing problems, and they are considering banning them from the resort’s beaches, effective this summer.

Commissioner Stan Mills said police Chief Keith Banks and Rehoboth Beach Patrol Capt. Kent Buckson are concerned about what amounts to campsites on the beach: canopies are strung together, some with portable changing rooms and grills for cooking on the beach.

No joking here. This past summer DH and I were sitting behind one of these canopies and watched in utter amazement when it was time for the village members to leave. They had six large coolers one of which contained a rice cooker!!! Another had the last few ribs, another a blender, for smoothies for the kids, another a watermelon. We had seen the meal during the day but the rice cooker and blender only became evident when they were dismantling the village. I am lucky I want to carry my chair and the dermatologist insists upon an umbrella if I must go to the beach! I have not noticed the port o potties the article mentioned nor the grills but this group was only short a kitchen sink, as they had a small generator to run the rice cooker and blender!!!

Do the State Park Beaches have any rules against them?

There is a certain beauty to a single beach umbrella. A necessity for those of us with grandma's Swedish skin. To sit on the beach and peacefully read a magazine or book. And occasionally look up and observe..

Rehoboth introduces beach canopy ban | Cape Gazette
The Ordinance has been introduced. $25 Civil fine may seem like just the cost of doing business to some folks.
