I'm from SC and we have no toll roads here, I drove up north and passed a couple, as far as I remember they all said EZ pass only or cash only, as I did not have either, I was not sure, which lane to take, first one by Balimore I was using the EZ pass only (I got out of my car and asked a cashier and he said I'll get it in the mail) so that's what I did for the next one as well, then the EZ only lanes were more busy, so I took the cash only lane, trying to pay by card, which was not possible, they said, I'll get it in the mail and I've asked if this is a violation and they said no. One time they gave me a def. payment letter.
So I have received toll by mail letters, but the one in Delaware (Plaza Newark) send me a notice of toll violation:
toll due $4
admin fee $25
ambulance co fund $10
combat violent crimes $15
total $54 for a $4 toll charge

Not sure if it makes sense to appeal, if I would have received the same charge for the other tolls, I would not think about it and pay as it is my fault for not being prepared, but I don't understand why this is so much more?

Because it's Delaware. (Ask anyone who lives here.)

Yep. And if you pay it on line there's going to be an additional transaction fee. Never saw anything like this place when it comes to such things. Come visit us on the weekend and you get to pay triple the toll rate on Route 1.

I'm in N.J., my niece borrowed my car to drive to S.C. and got a toll violation going through Delaware regarding EZ Pass. She was in the right, had the proof, mailed it to them, she still had to pay. Unbelievable. What is the "combat violent crimes $15" about? How much violent crime is in DE?

Guess you've never heard of Wilmington.

I can't imagine taking a long road trip without any cash. I keep a $20 in the glove box at all times.

Sure you do. The Southern Connector, located in Greenville, and The Cross Island Parkway, located on Hilton Head Island.

Some of the paved roads up here have tolls.
Most have warning signs like "LAST EXIT BEFORE TOLL".
Most of the dirt roads are free to ride on, though.

You mean if I moved there I have to equip my Toyota Camry with Truck tires?

I wonder if those with Delaware EZ pass transponders (like me) would have the same issues with Delaware EZ pass tolls.
