Default Newark/Wilmington

I know Newark is considered a nice place to live but is there any nice areas around Wilmington?

"Nice" to me, may not be "Nice" to you. Gentrification is currently taking place in the City of Wilmington, and many of the run down old houses are being replaced by new townhomes. If you like an urban area, Wilmington is for you, and you will find very nice housing. The train station is close, and Philadelphia National Airport is about 40 minutes away. On the other hand, Newark is a college town, and not as urban. Hard to explain, but I'm trying!

Hi, Kelly, please help!

Do you think Newark is safe and good place to live (with shops, restaurants, amusements around) and is University of Delaware a good place to study?

HKmom, you'll see my response on the U of Delaware thread, but specifically about regarding "shops, restaurants, and amusements" : the university surrounds Main St., Newark, which is lined with shops and restaurants, though I'm not sure about amusements. The old movie theatre was demolished years ago, though I'm sure there are others a bit farther away. As I understand it, there are many activities on campus, including clubs and get-togethers for students from other countries.

I don't recommend Wilmington, in general, as a place to seek amusement. Not because it doesn't have its good places, but because this small city is known for abrupt changes in neighborhoods. You really have to know where you are, where you're going, and take care. Too often, you turn a corner and find yourself in an area where safety is questionable.

Students take buses from campus to the Christiana Mall, one of the best in the area. I know of people who travel from Philadelphia to this mall. And, speaking of Philadelphia, a word of caution: again, go with a group, know where you're going, what you're planning to do. This city has a lot to offer, but it can be unsafe even in the "best" areas at certain times.

I hope this helps.

Crime happens everywhere and Newark is a University Town. What specific area of Newark are you interested in, HKmom? Yes, the University is a good place to study. I worked there many years ago, and enjoyed their campus, library, and enjoyed the shopping and quaintness of the area. I believe it's still the same, but bigger, of course.

The parts that are nice in Wilmington you probably cant afford, Newark is "safe" but don't expect any entertainment.
