New Castle County Apartment List & Opinions
I've spent the past month looking for apartments around New Castle, Newark and Wilmington online and the past week looking at the actual apartments. I'm a single professional working in New Castle looking for a high-quality, quiet apartment.
I'm sure a lot of you have also looked at many apartments. Let's see if we can put together a list of communities and people's thoughts on them.
General: A lot of communities are located along Route 40, which is a bit of a mystery to me. Route 40 doesn't come off as one of the best areas. Also, there's appears to be a lack of availability in the newer communities.
Appleby
Quiet neighborhood. Older units. Small and very basic gym.
School Bell
New apartments, but noise from Highway 1 or 7 can be heard throughout the community and inside the apartments. Looks to be well maintained with friendly staff.
Rockwood
Leasing center looks rundown and the area looks pretty bleak in general. Apartments looks good from the outside. I only saw the model.
St. Andrews
Nice apartments, but across the street from the Amtrak Maintenance yard/Rocla Concrete Tie Manufacturing facility.
Barrett Lane
Looks pretty good overall, but the available apts had 4 air conditioning units sitting outside the bedroom window, or suffered from a whistling wind tunnel effect.
Christina Landing
Expensive and poorly constructed. Concrete floors were noticeably uneven, casing the laminate wood floor to be uneven. Also, the neighborhood doesn't look so great with a Thrift store and auto body shop across the street. Very nice gym, colors, design and hardware though.
Ships Tavern Mews
Didn't go inside but I don't couldn't see myself living there. The area just looks a bit sketchy. There weren't any unsavory types wandering around (like there would be in NYC or SF), but there's just too much construction and too few people living around there for comfort.
Applechase
Right along Route 40.
Christiana Meadows
Chelsea on the Square
University Village
Arbor Pointe

This is a wonderful idea - I'll be sure to use this, then add to it, for my apartment-hunting trip in June.

I can't seem to figure out how to edit my post so here's a continuation
Christiana Meadows, Newark
Directly south of School Bell, so same noise from Highways 1 and 7. Older but gated community.
University Village - Chapman Rd & Rt273, Newark
Looked slightly run-down maintenance-wise from the outside. It's right next door to a shopping center with an Acme supermarket.
Arbor Pointe
Quiet and the model looked pretty good, except for the slightly odd eat-in kitchen space.
Deemers Landing - Washington & W 9th St, New Castle
Built in the past 2-3 years. Close to Battery Park and Historic New Castle. Quiet.

scary apartments
hey guys
where did you decide to rent? the majority of the reviews i have seen of newark apartments on apartmentratings.com are scary. drug dealers, shootings, roaches, lousy maintenance seem to be the norm.
the % ratings on the site are not useful either. the 5 star reviews look fake and posted by property office star because they are full of empty adjectives and no specific examples.

I gave up and applied for university housing, which is going to be quite ugly, but at least not in a potentially questionable neighborhood, and not $1,000/month. Also, I live in WI, and changed my mind about spending the money to fly out there again to look for apartments.
