The Wall St. Journal has had articles on the high cost of food today compared. I am in the Midwest, and I used to be able to go to Walmart and purchase the basics for $70 for 2 weeks. That bill now is about $115 for the same stuff. It's all over the country.
Of course, Delaware food seems high to many from places where it's grown like Texas. Food is cheaper in the southern states where it's grown with no transportation costs jumping prices up. Just the way it goes.
Delaware's tax situation is ideal--except for the 5.95% State income tax on earnings, which sucks. But...hey, can't have it all.

That 5.95 is the highest rate for income over $60,000. Social security income and the first $12,500 of pensions do NOT count toward the total.
If your income range is between $2,001 and $5,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 2.2%.
If your income range is between $5,001 and $10,001, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 3.9%.
If your income range is between $10,001 and $20,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 4.8%.
If your income range is between $20,001 and $25,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5.2%.
If your income range is between $25,001 and $60,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5.55%.
If your income range is $60,001 and over, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5.95%.
Hope this helps.

Hi everybody. I'm back from Delaware and I bought some newspapers. There were flyers from the supermarkets and I took a close look. For anybody interested, the food prices are about the same. Where the big difference is on the non-food items. New York has sales tax added. That is where the savings are. Of course, the flyers showed the sale prices of items. I can't compare regular prices. It will be what it will be. Food prices (higher, lower or the same) aren't going to stop me from moving to Delaware.

Charlie, I'm still figuring DE stuff, on Sterlings Best Places to Live they say Delaware has a 8.15 % income tax. Could this be state and fed? All their other figures seem dead on.

No. The minimal fed level is 10%. I have no idea where 8.15% comes in unless it's been passed in the last three days, because at the beginning of the week, the numbers I quoted were still the numbers.
The top rate is 5.95% for incomes over $60,000. Here are the full details from several different sources, including the state website:
Delaware
Delaware state taxes
The Tax Foundation - Tax Data for 18
That 8.15% has to be an error.
Charley

When we moved here, my bills were dropping like crazy. Car payment dropped $30 a month. No tax even though we bought our car in PA.
Now with the high gas prices, we are paying more than that a month. OMG.....it is getting out of control.

You might call a sub something else, like torpedos or ??? You will love that place! It's my favorite, of all favorites! They have organic foods, too, if you're looking for that, and other items similar to what Byler's Amish Store has.

I love Willey Farms!!
If you want good Amish food, Bylers Store on Rt. 8 west of Dover is great.
TootsieWootsie, the produce in slower, lower Delaware comes from local farms. The prices aren't normally as high as if you'd bought produce that had been trucked in. There is a grocery store that uses all local produce in season, Hockers in Ocean View.

I have to tell you that gas is still .20 to .30/gallon less than where we live in New York. We saw the prices last week and checked the pumps here when we got home.
