When we were looking to retire, we were looking at the houses and communities.
Southern Meadows just happened to be in Magnolia. I liked the idea of a small one horse town. dover is only about 10 mins away.
If I had my choice of neighborhoods, probably it would be the Camden Wyoming area. I do like it there.
Milford is nice too and I know the river walk Delly was talking about. There is also a tea room called Victorian Lady which is one we want to try.
Anybody want to go?

Hey Eliza! Just have to warn you that all alternate routes anywhere in Delaware are paved with snakes!
OK, off topic! I've read about the way you found Magnolia and your home, and think you did a absolutely superb job with your research. Truly an example for anyone seeking to move.

Thanks for the compliment, Annie! There's something to be said for being in one place for 67+ years . Notice, I'm not 68 yet!
The Answer to the beach route question: Starting from Camden WalMart, take Rt. 13 south, left on Canterbury Road to Route 14 (Milford-Harrington Hwy.) and left to Route 113. Then, I go IN to the City of Milford, take a southerly turn on Elks Lodge Rd, Left (easterly) turn on Wilkins Rd. and South on Cedar Creek Road (Route 30). OR....just take Route 1 south past Milford, Right on Wilkins Rd. and South on Cedar Creek Road. I stay on Route 30, Cedar Creek Road until you see signs to Route 5 South. Take Route 5 South, cross over Ellendale Highway, go through Milton, Cross over Route 9 at Harbeson, stay on Route 5, which becomes Indian Mission Road, and it takes you to Route 24 (John J. Williams Hwy). Take a left, and that will take you to Route 1. This route runs you right along side of Coastal Highway, Route 1.
Or, my favorite way.... When you get to Route 9, see underlined above, make a left on Route 9, then a right on Beaver Dam Road. From that point I weave around.....behind Lowes, behind the outlets, sometimes using shopping center roads to get where I want, without getting on Route 1. Sorry, those road names escape me. It sounds complicated, but I do it all the time, and there's no traffic until Route 24 intersection, but the parking lots running together help me avoid that. I'll being doing that trip this afternoon. I can get almost to Dewey Beach this way, pretty easily, and never get on Route 1. It's quicker for me. Sorry for the long post.

I really think it all depends on which location suites you the most. Milton is 15/ 20 minutes closer to the beach whereas Camden and Magnolia are closer to Dover and points north. I've heard that Caesar Rodney is the preferable school district in this neck of the woods. I still would say that having school age children, schools would be of utmost importance. Maybe even start another thread on comparison of both school districts.

what have you done! Do you realize you have just given away the biggest local secret in DE's recent history? I live just east of RT.1 right where 30 and 1 intersect. Depending on traffic thats the way we go also. Caesar Rodney does have better schools but are horribly overcrowded. Friends of ours live in Magnolia and say there son sometimes must share textbooks because there are not enough to go around. I've lived in Milford since I was 15 yrs. (36 now)old its not perfect but we like it here. Close to Dover, and the beaches.

Delly! I've just discovered your beach route. I promise not to tell anybody. Truly, I don't think many who read here, and certainly not all the NJ'rs and PA'rs who use OUR beaches , are likely to take notes.
Don't you think we could have figured this out in our 30+ years here? In fact, we do have a route from our house in north Dover that gets us around traffic for a while, but puts us back on Rte. 1 much too soon.
Thanks!

Good, Annie! I almost burned that route up last week, going back and forth to work. I think you're right.....those just moving here, or thinking about it, aren't brave enough to venture on those back roads.
