some years back Shuttle America flew to the nearby Wilmington/Newark airport. I used it when I worked on flights from Providence. The service lasted about a year then SA shut down and became a U.S. Air partner. Why isn't there any service into the airport now? With the growth in population DE is experiencing one would think more would not want to fly from any nearby airport. Trenton has experienced different levels of service over the years, but not the DE airport. What is going on?

I remember that in the summer of 2015 Frontier Airlines had flights from Denver to Wilmington Airport. I don't know how long a period they flew there but I was considering at the time flying there but in the end didn't.

It's an industry-wide thing. It wouldn't even come close to competing with Philly on price. I'd like to have a usable airport right there, but I'm definitely not going to pay way more for it.

Most people I know in Delaware use BWI, for lots of reasons. Some prefer to fly to BWI from Delaware Airpark. http://www.delawareairpark.com/

That probably make sense if you're downstate.

Yea, BWI isn’t a go-to airport for folks in northern NC County. PHL is only about 20 miles from downtown Wilmington. There really isn’t a viable case to be made for the New Castle airport.

Right. If you're in New Castle County, it makes more sense to get to PHL within a half hour than pay some high premium tov use a tiny airport. If you're downstate that tiny expensive airport would be at least an hour away. There are very few areas that support two airports within a half hour, except for primary hubs and large metros not close to other large metros. The Northeast already has many major airports reasonably nearby and easily accessible. Small airports are very expensive. They even often receive federal subsidies to survive.

The best option for downstaters is the Salisbury airport. When I lived away from this area, I often flew there to visit family in Seaford. Costs a bit more to make the connection, but uber-convenient.

Those times I didn’t make the connection, I typically flew into PHL and rented a car. It’s pretty much a staight shot from Philly to Seaford on good highways. I tried using BWI one time, but much of the drive from that airport Seaford is on single lane roads through rural towns. And beach traffic further impedes the drive during the vacation season.

I agree, if in New Castle County, PHL is most convenient.
BWI is pretty easy and quicker for mid-state Delawareans, and also for Maryland Eastern Shore friends/family near Easton, MD. From Dover, we just hop on Rt. 301, an easy non-congested drive.

Years ago, it was my job to transport some famous entertainers, and political figures from CAT (Civil Air Terminal) to their destinations in Delaware. That's another choice in addition to Cheswold, is small, but handy for those purposes. The Delaware State Fair is going on in Harrington, DE this week, and some entertainers are landing at that terminal. That location is also available for transporting passengers.

I live in Lewes, and use both Philadelphia and Baltimore airports, usually picking whichever has the better route to my destination (preferably nonstop), or the less expensive fare. As far as distance, they are nearly identical (Philadelphia is 109 miles from my house, Baltimore 111 miles). Time-wise they are also close; as of this moment in time, Google Maps says the drive to PHL would take 1 hour 49 minutes and BWI 2 hours and 9 minutes, but I have always found them to be about equal driving time during the day.
