NJ to Delaware?
Hi all,
Yes...the last thing you want..a NJian moving to Delaware.
Believe me, I feel your pain. The reason I have to leave the town where 4 generations of family has lived is because of the people flooding into NJ and driving up the prices, taxes, overpopulation, etc.
Here is where we are at: My fiance is in insurance, I am a licensed massage therapist and artist. We are old salts from what was a small seashore town and the ocean is in our blood. We are young and don't make enough to buy $300 houses, we only make about 45k a year right now. We need work and we need ocean. We also need to be around friendly people. If i walk into another Shoprite at 5:30 pm and get hit with the rudeness and negativity for another year, I'll scream. I am asthmatic and can't handle enviromental pollution.
Any suggestions on what to start looking at? Or to even pass Delaware by? Some of our friends have moved down there, which is why we are considering it.
I would also like to hear from transplanted NJians and your experience.

Well I too am from a small NJ coastal town (Oceanport, part of the central Jersey shore) and I too am looking in Delaware on the coast. Until now we've been looking in NC but may set our sights on something closer to home. I'm sure leenerbups and I would appreciate any help the locals can give us. I'm through paying $6000.00/yr in taxes. (And that's nothing!)
Happy New Year to all!

Hey NJBites
I'm In Oceanport too!
I grew up in Delaware - great place. It is southern compared to NJ and of course you know they have next to nil taxes.

Hey Nancy! Funny meeting a neighbor on these forums! So tell me, is there a coastal town in DE that approximates Oceanport? I have ten yrs before retirement and could possibly transfer down. We love it here but we just don't see giving all our hard-earned money to the state.
We were looking at NC because they don't tax fed pensions but the home savings in DE might offset that perk. What do you think? Anything comparable?
By the way, we have no kids so schools are not a priority but boats and water and recreation are.
Nice to meet you. Maybe we'll bump into each other. Take care and happy new year! Gary

NJ Bites...
You would love Rehoboth Beach (altho it has gotten very expensive), Lewes (also a beach town), Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach............quite frankly, they are all even BETTER than tax eating Oceanport.
I just sold my house --- had to -- taxes went thru the roof from the last assessment. Trying to buy back in is nuts!!!! $600K for a fixer uper and taxes are 7-8K.
I WAS on the water -- had lived there 16 years -- I literally got taxed out.
You work for the Fort?

Hi Nancy. No I don't work for the Fort but I do work for the gov. Can't tell you more than that........hahahaha. Just kidding. Letter carrier. I could transfer down to DE and be rather comfy my last few work yrs. So do you live in DE or 'death by taxes' NJ?
Any info you could offer on shore towns would be appreciated. I know they're liable to be more expensive.
Thanks again. Gary

Leenerbups, I moved to the Millsboro area 10 years ago from North Jersey and the only jobs that are pretty much available down here in the southern part of the state is either Retail (Outlets), Government (must be related or know someone already who has the inside Gov job already), or Tourism. My wife has been trying to get a job as a teller at any bank for almost ten years now and they only will take you part time first. Forget about even trying to battle the summertime traffic to get to the ocean unless it is after Labor Day or October and its a nice Indian Summer day. Everything is relevate when you move. We bought our double wide home 10 years ago for $60,000 and it was just appraised last year at over $200,000, not a bad investment. You can still find good prices down here but need to move more to the western side of the state. If you find a good agent they may be able to find you a good deal closer to the ocean. You should have no problem finding a job as a massage therapist. Most taxes that we do have are very low still. Not too much infrastructure when it snows a few inches they close all school and think its a blizzard. But yes, you are making a smart move getting out of NJ. Delaware has improved a lot over the years but then again I remember when NJ was the same way. Very little crime down here in the southern part of Delaware. Some people still leave there front doors open still. Also we dont have the luxury of the good Italian Bakeries, and pizza like in New Jersey. If you need anymore info I can help you. I pretty much tell it liek it is.

Hey NJTransplant, I'm from Oceanport NJ. Know where that is? Near Long Branch, Middletown. Anyway I'm thinking of coming down as a government transfer. Any nice towns near the coast that are still affordable? By that I mean up to around 325k for a 3/2 cape on a small lot. I'm paying 6k for prop taxes and I'm sick of it!
Thanks for your help, Gary

NJTransplant hasnt posted in quite some time but I'm sure others will - in the meantime, you can do a search for lot rents or land leases which will bring up a lot of info on the forum - I too w/b hesitant b/c of the uncertainty - jmo.
