We are relocating from NYC area due to hubby’s job. We have a 3 year son who will enter pre k this fall. We don’t plan on having more children but want to provide good education for our soon. We are East Asian and would prefer diversity. Our housing budget is up to around $650k.

We are considering Unionville Chadds Ford area or Red Clay School district in Wilmington.

We are also considering sending our son to private school.

So questions are:

1. If we work in Wilmington but live in PA, I understand you pay DE higher tax and PA will refund the tax you paid to thr state. Is there any other taxes? I heard of Wilmington city tax and Kennett Sq also has county tax? Can someone confirm how this all works? Trying to see what would be more cost efficient - living in DE or PA.

2. I have heard many saying public schools in PA are better than DE. But what dors that actually mean? Better curriculum? Better teachers/facilities? Can someone elaborate on “better”?

3. With one kid, does it make sense to move to Unionville Chadds Ford for schools or stay in DE? We do care about schooling so want to make the best decision.

4. High cancer rate? Why? Does it have to do with farms in the surrounding area? High rates of lung, prostate and breast cancer rates. What causes this?

Thank you all for your help!!!!!

If you plan on buying a house, PA will be more expensive.

Unionville is a small rich white district. Red Clay is a large sprawling, economically and racially diverse district. Those things mean pretty much the same thing they mean anywhere else. If by diverse you specifically mean East Asian, a lot of Chinese families live around Hockessin and aim for North Star elementary. A lot of South Asian families in the area as well. I have a child in the nearby Linden Hill where there is a Chinese immersion school, and I'm mostly happy with it.
