Thanks, Elizamary, for your nice words. We're still slowly researching several states and there's good and bad in all of them - slowly narrowing it down (I think!) - might as well go into it w/ open eyes - I dont mind hearing the bad b/c I take it w/ a grain of salt. Sometimes I think we're too flexible and it w/b easier eliminate the uncertainty and just to stay put or throw a dart at a map and get it over w/, LOL.

Laural, welcome back. Are you still househunting or did you find a place - ?

Having lived her all my life it hasn't been difficult for me to find a job. I just retired from DSP in July. The part-time job I was working at has now become a full-time job. I've heard that property tax alone was more expensive in other states. Since it's cheaper to be here, wonder why there isn't more "big business" here. Our governor doesn't do the greatest job in that area.

I think it's understandable to resent newcomers who want to change the new area wherever one lives, sorry if that's been your experience but it is what it is and while sometimes change is good, for the most part I think people everywhere have a 'live and let live' attitude and certainly arent looking to change things, especially in their 'golden' years. Realisticallly, no place is perfect, everywhere has its good and bad, I think one has to keep that in mind when relocating.

Are you thinking of moving to AZ, NM or TX?
I would love to move to AZ, NM or TX, I have obligations here though.

The one thing that I really resent is that when the people change the way things are here...and basically that's why they moved here, then they don't like it that way, move away and we are stuck with little Philly, W. Chester, Baltimore or wherever they came from.

I think life, earning a decent income, and planning for the future, is what you make of it. I believe in setting a goal, working hard, and achieving that goal. I made that decision when I was 39 years old, after working menial low paying jobs which I never liked. I knew I was not going to follow that path forever, so against all odds, and as poor as I could be, I succeeded in fulfilling my ambition to be self employed, successful, and at the top of the pay scale within my profession. We all have choices.
Great job.

For instance, if I am happy living here.......why should anyone resent the fact I'm here. And you are correct, we are not looking to change things in our golden years. We bought here because it like it just the way it is. Of Course, I can't speak for other seniors but I"m sure most of us feel this way.
And you are correct........every place has its good and bad. the trick is to find a place that will suite your needs as much as possible.

Love your attitude Your post deserves trillions of stars
But the "live and let live" only seems to apply to how you feel about locals. We shouldn't apply it to the way it's always been. If we wanted people coming here to live and let live, we sure wouldn't be as welcoming as some folks are.

there may be retirees on this board but there are also a great deal of younger couples and middle age moving in. PA, Marych and Lash are not retired either.

There are many communities springing up around me that are NOT 55+ with beautiful BIG homes.
There most be jobs. Maybe not as many as say....Phila. Some communite to PA or MD. Housing is more reasonable here than there that is for sure.
I have seen a load of posters not retired but just want to live in Sussex county nearer to the beach.

For myself, I plan to go back to work part time in about a year. It is not easy finding a job but that is all over in every state.
I can understand wanting to live near the beach, been a beach bum all my life. Good luck finding a job. Lowes is coming to town soon.

Its not hard finding a job everywhere. Larger cities, as a rule, have more jobs since there are more ppl which means more businesses and services there are to offer. Moderator cut: edit has nowhere near the population or the jobs that any larger city has and therefore has fewer job offerings.

The original poster has asked a great question, one that Ive asked myself several times. It all depends on what your view of life is. Moderator cut: edit
Thanks.

Oh, you've noticed that also, huh? I hear it all the time.....something like...."We moved here to get away from all the development, crowds, and over-building! They should really stop building these subdivisions".............
Now that THEY are here, contributing to the over-population, they want the building to stop! Ironic!

Yeah Laurel........How you doing?

Picking a state to live in was a tough decsion. We checked out Fl, Ar, Pa, Nj, Va, Md and DE.
Started about 3 years before I retired. Slowly but surely each state got eliminated for one reason or another.
We were willing to move far from our home where friends and loved ones are but I'm so glad we didn't.
My sister and my youngest daughter are in PA. My sister took Ill a couple months ago and I am so glad we are here. She is fine now by the way. But no, we made the right choice. Took a while but we finally got there and are here over a year already.

Met a lady once when I worked on Long Neck road, she came from PA and was thinking about moving back because if you haven't been there recently...there are a lot of homes on Long Neck road (with only one way out). She said she had come here for peace and quiet and it's not that anymore. I told her she should have shut the door when she got in.

Just curious, why didn't you want to stay where you had lived.

See here is my idea...when my mortgage is paid, I don't want another one. Did you take on a new mortgage? My husband and I would just love to live out of a motor home at one point in time. My girls are here and would supply the permanent address we would need.

There is a multi-quote button that you can just go down the list of posts and quote them all and answer each individually. Each post starts with a [ quote] and ends with a [/quote ] just make sure you don't type between them and it'll come out like mine.

I've been on a christian board that runs vbcode like this one so I'm very familiar.

For me, this answer is simple. New York costs and taxes are too high, noise and traffic are out of control and I'm tired of shoveling snow and mowing the lawn. A Delaware 55+ community gives me everything I'm looking for in quality of life while keeping me close enough to family.

Charley

Thanks Charley. I can understand the sentiment of not wanting to cut grass again. Ours is growing like wildfire.

Unlike Delly, I haven't been here quite since dirt but a long time nevertheless. My husband took early retirement, the Golden (?) years are looming, and we do plan to move, though the housing market problems will likely slow us down a bit. A bit may equal two years or so. I'm fortunate in that I'm self-employed and can do my work anywhere.

We like many aspects of Delaware, but we have no family here, so that's our primary reason for moving. It will become more challenging for us to travel as we get older, and family have jobs and various responsibilities that keep them from visiting often. We have several other reasons for moving, including wanting to be a bit more adventurous, but sometimes I think that it may well be better to stay put and find the adventure in trips!

Jobs / careers can be a problem in certain parts of Delaware, and that's one of the reasons we've not been able to lure family here.

I fully agree with those who point out that this is a good place for many financially, retired or not. We know that we're not going to get anywhere near the house we have now in any of the places we may choose to move to--though I think we won't want a larger house at that time.

The Dover area has lots of things going for it, and seems to be adding more. I'd like to see some more good restaurants choices, and some of the stores that so many people have mentioned here: Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Ikea, Barnes and Noble, etc. I suspect that the population will have to increase substantially before these appear.

Long post, sorry. Back to work, busy day.

Thank you for your post. I worked in Dover for years and years. It has grown by leaps and bounds.

I'd love to see a Whole Foods down here in slower, lower too.
