The farther you go up the Delaware river until about Philadelphia, the higher concentration of Mercury you'll encounter.
I sure as hell wouldn't eat any fish from the river (maybe the bay.) |

I suggest you read DNREC fish consumption advisories....some of the fish in delaware bay are listed at one meal per year to keep you below epa standards.....I call that inedible. Sad but true.

I have seen signs posted at the lakes and streams around the Dover area that there is a limit on how many fish per year are safe to eat. I'm not sure what all this means but I would say if there is a sign posted to that effect, I would surely heed the warning.

If I saw a sign posted where I'm fishing, I don't think I would keep the fish at all. Probably wouldn't even fish there. I like to eat what I catch.

My father and I would like to go fishing one of these days. We just moved to DE so I am not sure where we should go to fish. I would prefer to fish in an area where it is safe to eat what we catch.
Help me pleaseee!! =) |

What waterway are you near? Maybe Bowers Beach? Indian River? I'd pose that question to one of the captains of a fishing party boat, or even to local fishermen in those places.

There is some good fishing to be had at Lums Pond but, seeing as it is a State Park, I believe it's a catch and release only pond, though I could be wrong. In any rate, you wouldn't want to eat anything you caught out of there anyway due to pollution. Sadly, it seems that almost all the waterways and ponds in New Castle County have one restriction or another on what is safe to eat. I wouldn't eat any of it, especially out of the Delaware River. It's not worth the risk.
Now, I'm not sure about the southern part of the state, but I think it's one of those cases where the further down you go, the safer it is to eat the fish out of the water. It seems to be ok to eat fish out of the Bay as long as you don't eat it every day. For you, since you live near Lums Pond, I would consider looking into Maryland for fresh water fishing where you can eat what you catch. Try going west of Elkton, places like Charlestown, Northeast, Havre' De Grace, places like that. There is a ton of good fishing spots in Delaware though so if you just want to enjoy the fishing, stay put! |
