I just did an internet search and was shocked, SHOCKED to discover that the closet Target and Bed Bath & Beyond to Newark are 30 minutes away in Wilmington. Are there any local or regional Target-like stores in Newark? Apparently I didn't realize how spoiled I had become, having 3 Targets within a 15-minutes' drive from my front door here in Wisconsin!

There's a Super Walmart just down the road in Elkton, MD.

Thank you! I should have mentioned that I was hoping for something other than a Wal-Mart...not that I'm picky or nothing...

My boyfriend now informs me that "You have to remember that the rest of the country does not judge degree of civilization by how close you are to Target, Kmart or Walmart. That's a purely Midwest quality." If anyone has any insight on THAT, that would be helpful too... It's not that I'm stuck on major chains - a local Target-type store would be good too (here we have Shopko).

There are two Kohl's. One is on Route 40 in Glasgow and the other is on Kirkwood Highway (Route 2). From Newark, Route 72 turns into Route 2, which is Kirkwood Highway.

Can't think of any Target-like chains that are exclusive to the Delaware area.

There's a Kmart in Newark that I totally forgot about (in College Square, near the Pathmark), but I'm guessing that's not really going to fit the bill either.

That's great! I'm relieved that there is a Kmart and Wal-Mart near by. Since they're not my preferred stores, I just went into a panic when I found out about the Target and forgot to check on those chains. I'm happy to know that I won't have to drive 30 minutes to buy make-up or other emergency supplies .

Delaware is a different world from the Midwest. It's a much older area where property is a lot more scarce (and tightly held on to). Roads are also tighter with not much room for expansion. So big box is always difficult except in more remote areas. The only reason the Target got approval in North Wilmington is because it was a redevelopment of an old horse racing track, and the highways were already there. (Incidentally, the Kmart in Newark sits where another horse racing track once stood.)

There are plans to build a Target and supermarket just blocks from Newark, on Kirkwood Highway (State Route 2) and Possom Park Road (State Route 72). This faces stiff opposition as usual, but there are likely no grounds for the County to reject the plan since it will include housing as well as retail. But FYI: the Target in Wilmington took many years to get through the approval process.

There is always the possibility of a Target coming to the Christiana area (about 5 miles south), as there are three major retail developments underway as I type. Developers are always hush about exactly who has signed a lease, and you have to dig for information on such things. In fact, I was researching these developments when I found your post. :-)

But like others said, Kmart is VERY close to downtown Newark. It's a bit ratty, but it'll do in a pinch! WalMart is a bit further, but really, it's a 10-minute drive.

No problem. If you're moving to the area, keep your fingers crossed. While I live in Wilmington and can drive up to Target in 10 minutes, I work in Newark and would LOVE love to be able to swing by Target on the way home.

There's a Kohl's 7 minutes away on Kirkwood Highway. BTW, 30 minutes north of Newark is Pennsylvania. The target is a 15 minute drive.

We have something called Burlington Coat Factory which sells lots of cheap clothes that are decent looking. If you want the cheap crap, you have Walmart 10 mins away in Bear.

Don't be so pessimistic. There's enough of whatever you need around Newark, including the entire Christiana Mall. They might not be the chains you are used to seeing. It's a different region.
