Question Delmar - A nice little town? Possible Relo...

Let me know. I'm worried about the "chicken smell" I hear talk of....have two tween kids, want a nice, family atmosphere.

Does Delmar qualify?

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi, I do not know anything about Delmar as I am just about to move to DE (Bethany Beach) next month. However, you mentioned a chicken smell. I am wondering if that is what I smelled a few weeks ago on one of our trips to our new home in Bethany Beach. Can anyone comment on this? I only smelled it the once, but it was not pleasant. It smelled like dirty feet. I am thinking the smell comes and goes? hopefully, lol. Luckily the smell doesn't hit out n'hood (at least I hope it does not). Just wondering.

The commercial poultry industry got its start in the small town of Ocean View, DE. It was probably the only 'real' town of any substance near the beach for many years. Bethany Beach is grew up on an area that was used for religious retreats.

When you think about it, there was no need to settle near the ocean until about 50 or 60 years ago. You couldn't farm the sand. People began the vacation thing after WWII. The trek to the beaches increased after the Bay Bridge was built.

I think most of the commercial poultry farms have moved in land and further south on the peninsula. The land near the ocean is far too valuable to keep chicken farmin'.

I doubt that any order from chickens is near Old Bethany. Even back around where Bear Trap is had chicken houses until not that long ago. They are gone.

Tabitha, I don't know what you might have been smelling. When there is a land breeze, you do get the order of brack water. I usually get a good whiff when I cross the Indian River Bridge going south. Then I know I'm close to home. Ahhhhhhhh!

Disclaimer...Ummm, I could be wrong....the above is just my opinion. Maybe someone local knows of some old, hidden chicken houses somewhere near by the 'over settled' areas.

Delmar, Seaford, Laural, and all of that "slower-lower" Delaware area have chicken farms, and chicken smells, because that is mostly agricultural land, and where the farming industry is still flourishing. There are a couple or three chicken processing plants in southern Delaware, with one near indian River on John J. Williams Highway (Rt. 24). Mountaineer and Purdue are two plants that come to mind. I've visited many chicken farms around Roxana, Millville and Clarksville, also, in regard to my work. It doesn't seem to have stopped all of the transplants from moving into the area, so you should be fine

Don't know much about the East Coast...(just happened by this thread)...however, I DO know that the Delaware coast has extensive inland lagoons...and I also know that tidal mud flats DO have what newcomers might find a "foul" smell, at low tide...and if you're new to the beach, it MIGHT be that this is what you're referring to. If so, it would be pronounced at low tide, and be gone by high tide. Incidentally, it's not REALLY a 'bad' odor, and most people on the coast soon grow almost fond of it....but it COULD surprise you, if you're 'new' to it...

Thanks Macmeal,
Though I am not sure if that is what I smelled. We will be living in Bethany Beach full time starting next month so we will see I suppose.

Unless you plan to entertain your children with a tractor or showing them how to dress a chicken don't move to delmar. The people are very nice but there is nothing else there.

Delmar is right near salisbury museums , zoo boating fishing.....ocean 30 minutes away.....depending on who you are could be alot to do around delmar. I have a couple friends on the maryland side of delmar and they like it. Both are professionals too (have good jobs).
