Just discovered that my DE tag expired on 6/20. I never received any renewal notice either by mail or email. I'm pretty sure that the Delaware DMV was closed during this time. Did anyone get any renewal notice from DMV during this time? I'm hoping I can re-register my vehicle without any fines.

I am not going to be able to offer an answer regarding the fine portion, however, I can advise that you check your email for accuracy with DMV. I have a ZERO in my email and it was typed in at DMV with an O, so I never got the email. We were pulled over by a City of Rehoboth cop who told us we obviously had ignored the 90, 60 and 30 day notification. We told the officer that we never got even one, but I am sure they all say that and I said I bet the address was incorrect. He wrote us a ticket and we had to pay a $57 dollar fine to the city. I don't recall paying anything at DMV since they had typed it in wrong, but it was 6 years ago.

OP,
I believe late fees were waved starting in June 2020. That was supposed to be valid until further notice. I don't see any update to the notice they posted on the DMV site.

Take a look at the DE DMV site for additional information.

If you just need to update your registration that can be done online. If you need to have your car inspected before you can renew your registration you will need to go to the DMV.

When I got my car inspected in June 2020 I could also renew my registration without going into the building. All was done via the drive thru.

If you go onto the DMV website you can use chat to ask if the registration fees are still waived.

From the DMV website...

Registration Renewal Notification - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Registration Renewal eNotification? What am I signing up for?
A. Vehicle owners can now sign up online (or at any DMV branch location) to receive vehicle registration expiration notification via email or telephone. An email address and up to two phone numbers can be provided on the website.

...so you have to sign up for the email notifications.

It is true that you have to sign up for email notifications, but, the DMV stopped sending out email notifications when the pandemic hit and they were only handling emergency situations. They posted to their web site that they were suspending inspections and registration renewal fines until further notice - as there was a backlog when they were shut down in April and May of 2020.

The DMV is now doing inspections and registration renewals with limited capacity, but, I don't think they have started sending out renewal notices via email as they still have limited capacity due to Covid restrictions.

At least that is the way it worked when I was due for my inspection in June 2020. I never got my usual email notification, but, was able to get in for an inspection when they started allowing non emergency inspections to resume.

I have received registration renewal emails during the pandemic both for May 2020 renewal as well as recently for the May 2021 renewal, so I'm not sure why you are not receiving them.

Have you gone to the DMV to specifically update it?

I did not get a renewal email for June 2020, but, I got my inspection and registration renewal done once they lifted the emergency only restrictions they initiated in mid March thru May of 2020. I renewed my registration for 2 years at that time. So, I am not due for a registration renewal until June 2022.

Guess the best way to find out for sure if they are still waving penalties for expired tags is to contact the DMV.

OP here. Went to the DMV today. No questions, no penalty, no inspection. Renewed tags for 1 year. I am registered to receive emails for renewals but either I didn't get them or they went to spam folder.
