Default Wilmington City Wage Tax (Earned Income Tax)

Hi Everyone

I understand that anyone who lives in "the city of Wilmington" has to pay a city wage tax of 1.25%.
City Departments: Finance: Earned Income Tax

My question is....what zip codes are in the "city of Wilmington"? I know it would include zips like 19806 and 19807, but what about suburban areas like 19803, 19808, 19809, etc. ? Would I have to pay a city wage tax if I lived in any of those zips?

If anyone knows the answer, please let me know. Thanks!!

Default RE:Wilmington City Wage Tax (Earned Income Tax)

I just spoke with the Earned Income Tax Department and they said you pay the tax if you work in or live within the actual city. The tax would not apply if you live in the outlying suburbs (i.e. 19803 zip code) unless you also work in the city.

You can't really go by ZIP Codes, as the postal service has nothing to do with city government. They draw those lines as they wish, since it's for their convenience alone.

The only ZIPs almost entirely in the city (that I can tell) are 19801, 19802, and 19806. About half of 19805 is in the city, and only small parts of 19809 and 19807 are. So really, you need to get an official corporate map for Wilmington to know for sure.

As jstrawley stated, it applies to anyone who works in the city as well, no matter where they live.

19801 19802 and 19806 are entirely in the city of Wilmington.

Half of 19805 is in Wilmington.

Everything else is suburbs.

I finally found the final word on the subject. You can locate any street and it gives the address ranges that are in the corporate limits of the city:

http://www.ci.wilmington.de.us/pdf/codingguide.pdf

They claim parts of the following ZIPcodes: 19801, 19802, 19805, 19806, 19807, 19850, 19899.

All maps I see show land below 495 as in the city, so yes, part of 19809 is in the city, as well. But I don't think anyone lives down by Cherry Hill. And I think the only parts of 19807 in the city are along Greenhill Avenue and maybe along Lancaster Avenue at N. Dupont.

Either way, if you have a question about living/working in the city, use the link above. That is the definitive word on the subject. I had an employer withhold city taxes when I first moved to Greenville...because parts of 19807 are in the city--so they assumed all of it was!

Incidentally, the best ZIP map I've found: http://maps.huge.info/zip.htm

True, Glenn.. I forgot about 19807. I tend to forget about the rich areas of Wilmington.

850 and 899 are business zip codes for the credit card companies, and I sincerely hope nobody lives in Cherry Island.

In this economy, you never know. And I'm thinking I've been on the bus with a few Cherry Island residents before.

And true on the 850 and 899. I worked for a CC company located in Christiana some years ago, and they had payment addresses in Wilmington 19899 AND 19850. Too bad the PO won't allow symbols: 19$$$.
