Where to buy in Delaware?

Much of our social life is in Philly, and the traffic seems lighter going south to work, so we've scoured the Bear area.

I finally figured out that I just don't like the developments DE is full of. I grew up in New England, and I seem to like privacy, lots of trees and houses that are a bit . . . quirky, I guess. Every time I see a non-development house, I see "coming development" signs all around it. I really don't want to move to MD or NJ, but I'm beginning to wonder if we have any other choice.

Do those of you who have been here longer than I have have any other ideas about where we should be looking?

Commuting from No. Del. to Dover is unrealistic. The highways are a moving parking lot. However if you both work from home a great deal, I would consider the Brandywine River area idea for you in PA. Possibly Chadds Ford or Mendenhall, both gorgeous, both reminiscent of the New England landscape. Another option would be Hockessin, DE.

Odessa, Delaware on old Rt. 13 or Delaware city on Route 9. Both areas have history and Delaware City is off of the Delaware River where you can see Jersey. It has Pea Patch Island in its view a prison Island called the "Andersonville of the North" in the war between the states.
