Mary....too bad you're not "old enough"! On Sr. Citizens Day, gate admission is free for seniors. But, why don't you enter your jams and jellies? Or at least a couple? When I entered my jams, jellies, garden products....and we showed our animals, free gate admission, was a perc. Don't know about now, but I think that still holds true. We have free passes/tickets, from our many years of being involved in the Fair, which allows us to go every day/night. Our 2nd and 3rd cousins' children still show their thoroughbred cattle, and still sleep with them in the barns. The kids love it!

I agree, w/b so much fun to have your jams and jellies entered (although maybe too late for this year). I love the local state fairs, years ago we went to a huge one in Springfield MA and we've been to one in Sussex NJ several times (but for some reason, it's always sooo darn hot), one year we saw someone sitting on the grass in the front, unable to get in b/c they brought their dog and didnt realize no pets are allowed, not a great solution but the only solution as they definitely couldn't leave their dog in the hot car while they went to the fair (I think in the past, dogs had been allowed and they prob. just assumed...) - I love looking at the crafts but it is an expensive day as far as admission and food unless you do your homework and know in advance when there's discount days and pass on the food (but that's no fun! ). Would love to see some pictures if anyone cares to take any - and have a wonderful time! (and stay cool!)

So true, Delly. When my kids were younger, they used to enter various art works and other projects at our local county fair through the 4-H program. It was wonderful seeing them wander through the exhibit to see how many ribbons they won. In the old days, they used to award cash prizes - small ones. Maybe between the three of them, they'd collect enough ribbons to total $15 to $20, but it was really the spirit that was the fun part.

When we visited the fair last year and saw the exhibits, it reminded us of those days. It was also a treat on that day as it was the hottest day of the year and the building in which the exhibit was held was air-conditioned.

We're really looking forward to this year's fair - although this year we'll be visiting on a Saturday. I imagine we'll be part of a packed house!

Charley

If I remember right, the Sussex County Fair only discounts $1-2 off the main admission for seniors - so seniors would get in for a bargain rate of $9 . Not much of a deal, sheesh! Have driven past the DE fair a few times when our vacation coincided w/ the fair (DE was kind of midpoint) - am curious how it compares to NJ's (# vendors etc, may have to play w/ the sites later if I dont keel over from these high temps we're having). Neat that you have the casino option to cool off in. Am sure you'll have a grand time, will be w/ you in thought -

HI Honeycrisp......

the temps will level off by Wednesday. So we should be back to normal for this time of the year.......I hope anyway.

The fair was really a load of fun and like someone pointed out the exhibit bldg was air conditioned.
Just a nice way to spend the day.

My neighbors grand daughter entered her horse but he didn't win. The are long time delawarians.

Mary....kids get free admission on 7/22

Seniors get free admission on 7/21 and 7/24, Armed Forces/Sr. Day and Governor's/Sr. Day ............. over 60 yrs., that is.

I usually work down there, and it does get hot where I'm stationed. But it's always expected, plus, there's always a huge thunderstorm or two.
