Default What a great time!

Well.....we went to the state fair. Everyone got either a straw hat or a cowboy hat. We met up with MaryCh and her boys and had a great time! Unfortunately, the fireworks were late and hubby and one of the girls caught the tail end at the hotel. You can hear the entertainment and see the fireworks from there. I don't think I'm allowed to post which hotel, but it's down the road from the fair. We met a family from Smyrna who was staying at the hotel for the fair. They were very welcoming and warm as well.

Boy, did we ever have a blast at the fair. And IMHO, the weather was the best that day! So there WERE fireworks, huh?

As far as the hats, I never saw your hubby's. Yours and the girls' hats were perfect, and the pictures I got of all of you came out great! Will try to print you some, as a bit of a housewarming gift!

Funny, in a way, about the family from Smyrna staying at a hotel for the fair. Given the gas prices, it makes some sense. But in other ways, it doesn't. Did they say anything about having to be at the fairgrounds very early, or late, or whatever? Just curious!

I know when our son was in Newark for Special Olympics, we got a room there. But the events started at 8 a.m., and the athletes stayed in dorms at U-Del, and THAT was our justification for the hotel room. Plus, we got a good rate on the room.

Glad you had an awesome time... just a taste of what lies ahead as new residents of Delaware!

Mary

Yes, the fair was a blast. I don't think we could have had more wonderful weather. The fireworks happened about 10:30 or later, if I remember right. Oh well, at least hubby and one of the kids caught the tail end of them. Not really a big thing. As nice as they are to see, we saw fireworks here in NY on July 4th and 5th.

You never saw hubby's hat because he didn't buy it at the fair and he wasn't wearing it that day. He left it at the hotel. Can't wait to see the pics. No posting on the internet, please. Thanks.

The family from Smyrna was celebrating the boy's birthday and wanted to make it special, like a vacation, and get the most from their fair day. I think that was wonderful. The boy brought a friend and they really enjoyed the outdoor pool. They weren't working the fair. There was another woman who carried her little girl out of the hotel, early in the morning. They were working the fair because the Mom told the little girl they had to go feed the animals. She was so cute.

It was great seeing all the animals, crafts and such from the kids of 4H. One of my girls picked up a pamphlet and has already decided she would like to join 4H.

There was a woman who had a display to educate children about different bird eggs. She explained that anyone entering an animal in the fair gets a week off of tending to and paying for feed for the animal entered into the fair. The fair people pay for the feed and take care of the animal for the week. It's like having a babysitter for your animal, without the cost, and there is prize money involved if your animal wins!

There was an incubator and warming station for newly born chicks. It was great to see! The woman explained about a class she gives to kids about bird eggs. The display she had was with all kinds of eggs from Robin eggs to Ostrich eggs and many in between. She explains to the kids how they are all different on the outside but the same on the inside. Then she scrambles all the eggs together, cooks them and most of the children come back for a second helping. What a great way to help end racism and teach tolerance. I think it's wonderful!

We saw free entertainment provided by Delaware Electric Co-op. The navy rock band from MD was great! I don't remember their name. Also, there was an illusionist that was really good. We could have stayed in that tent all night but there was so much more to do. When we go back next year, we need to go a few days in order to enjoy it all. There is just so much to see and do that it can't be done in just one day.

Food, food and more food. There is food of all kinds. We had Hire's Root Beer, Lemonade, Orangeade, Funnel cakes, pizza, sausage, popcorn and I'm sure there was more I can't remember. The rides were great! The crafts and other vendors were great! Fun, fun and more fun was had by all. What a great way to spend my birthday.

Sorry for those of you who missed it. If you've never been there before, you might want to schedule it in for next year. I know that we will be there again!

Wow! You guys DID get around to a lot more than I thought! Even going Monday evening AND the day we met, we did not get to some of the things you did. Glad to hear it... and glad some of the presentations gave your kids ideas of things to get involved in when school starts. That will definitely help them both settle into their new world.

I don't intend to post the pictures on the internet... at least of specified people. Those, I will attach to an e-mail, at most. I'm very careful what I post on myspace, for friends and family, and NEVER without individual permission even there.

All that we saw at the Delaware Electric Co-op tent was wonderful too. We never caught the Navy band, either night. THAT would have been fun, I'm sure. We did see parts of the Vocal Trash performance, which was cool. I think you all were on the rides about that time, but I think everyone would have liked that as well. You're right, it could have been very easy to just hang out there all evening! What a great variety of entertainment, and it was all free!

That's really cool about the family from Smyrna; sounds like something we would do (and have done in past years with our older kids). I'll bet it was fun seeing the excitement in the kids' faces about going to the fair... as I've posted before, that is part of the charm for me. Reminds me of when I was a kid, and we traveled "back home" to Ohio for the county fair. My grandpa, the farmer, always worked the fair (sometimes at the gate, sometimes at game vendors, but always the whole week). We were SO happy when my folks said we were going... and grandpa being able to get us in for free didn't hurt anything either! Back then, the county fair was as long as DE's state fair; all the local kids there were farm kids, school closed for the week, since a good percentage of the kids were participating in the fair in one way or another. It's been about 5 years since we've made it back there for that grand event, but in a lot of ways, its still the same. I love it!

I certainly second movn2del's recommendation for those who could not attend... put the DE State Fair on your calendars for 2009!

Mary
