wilmington safety question - W 4th St & Market St
Hi everyone,
Would anyone happen to know how safe the area around W 4th St & Market St in Wilmington is at night, late in the evening? There seem to be several parking garages in the area - how safe would I be walking to my car?
Thanks!

Is this around the train station, by any chance? That is the only area I am familiar with, as we live "below the canal" and south of Dover. We've been to the train station several times, and at night. If this is the area, I for one would be sure to walk to my car with someone else after dark. But I would do that anywhere, not just Wilmington.

Not good. This is the "Ship's Tavern" historic area, that has recently been undergoing revitalization efforts. Maybe in 10 years we'll see an improvement .
During the day the area is basically safe. The courthouse is just a block down, Delaware Technical & Community College is a block up, and Chase Bank is a huge presence. The Riverfront is within walking distance. There is construction everywhere. After 5:00 p.m. it's a ghost town though, definitely not safe to walk to your car alone.
Are you thinking of living in the area? You may want to check out the Union Street/Little Italy area, for comparable rent prices.

your best bet is to avoid that area at all costs. I was told that 4th street, Market Street and Riverside of Wilmington are the no no areas. Another way to check if you are unsure, go to delaware online and there is a data tab at the top, then crime report and it will highlight areas bassed on the nuimber of crimes reported in the past 2 weeks. I have found that site very helpful in my search for a home.

Thanks all,
There is a bus that runs back and forth to New York and drops passengers off at this location, so I was wondering if I'd be safe walking back to my car at 7:30 or 9:30 at night...I guess not!

4th and Market isn't that bad. It's actually worse during the day than the night, as nothing is open down there at night. It's a dead area if anything at that time of night.
There are bound to be a couple crackheads who sleep downtown, but not the danger you would find either east or west of Market street.
The area is well lit, with lots of city police cameras. It is also near the intersection of 4th and King, which is a busier street. It is a block away from the Courthouse as well.
I wouldn't be overly worried.
Here is 4th and Market:

Here's a bad area for comparison's sake:

In conclusion...I drove through this area today, on a Saturday afternoon, and there's no way I would feel safe here alone at night.
