Default Safety in New Castle, DE

Hi, I'm new to this site and I'm interested in New Castle County, DE, mostly, New Castle City itself. I've been checking around here for a while and have seen that it seems that New Castle City is not a safe place to live. I have checked out that crime map (not exactly sure what it's called, but it shows the crimes in New Castle County) and it does seem that New Castle City has problems. However, I did not see any crimes at all in Old New Castle. I'm wondering how safe it is there, and if anyone has any information about Old New Castle in general, that would also be greatly appreciated! I have looked at places for sale in New Castle (I'm talking about the city, not the county in general; sorry for any confusion!) and I have found some places that look like they might be in the unsafe part of New Castle. However, the section closest to the Delaware River and Battery Park seem to be relatively safe, or at least from what I have found. If anyone could provide me with any information about Old New Castle, particularly its quality of living, I would really appreciate it! I apologize for any confusion; I live in PA but am interested in DE and am trying to get all the information I can. It's also about 2 am and I'm very tired! Haha Thanks in advance!

eye, Old New Castle is a small, somewhat separate area. It is a cluster of very old, restored homes with a smattering of new construction which is integrated to look like the surrounding antiquities.

If you check prices, you will find that the real estate is quite expensive compared to nearby communities. The residents are very protective of their historic homes and demand compliance with their values.

As a matter of fact, when the Rockerfellers began looking for a place to develop an historic site, they first began at Old New Castle. They left there, and they chose Williamsburg, VA instead.

It is a lovely area. Without cars and a few other modern objects, the place is a step back in time!

Thanks, Rockky! I did see that Old New Castle was a pretty expensive area. I just wanted to know if it was its own area or clustered with New Castle City. I've been searching through the threads but I haven't seen anything about Old New Castle. Thanks a lot for your information and if anyone else has other information that would be great as well!

The heart of Old New Castle (aka New Castle City) is actually very nice and safe; however, there are sections of Old New Castle that are not. Dobbinsville is in the southern end of town detached from the main area. That area of town is pretty rough. Dobbinsville is predominately white and they like to keep it that way. It is a very economically poor section of town. The Shawtown section of Old New Castle is another area to avoid (i.e. drugs). The Washington Park area is okay, but I wouldn't live there. If you're considering moving to Old New Castle aim for the historic district.

As far as serious crimes, avoid the areas north of the City along Rt. 9. The cluster of crimes that you are seeing are than likely outside of the incorporated section of New Castle City. Unfortunately New Castle City is surrounded by the armpit of New Castle County. New Castle County is funny like that. You can live in an affluent neighborhood but if you go one mile and sometimes one block in any direction your in a "shady" part of town.

Right along the river in Old New Castle is Battery Park. It's a nice park most of the time, but it does draw some rough people from outside of the historic district (the 'arm-pit' that a previous poster just referred to).

The houses are beautiful but very small... typical of Colonial-era times. There is very little entertainment, few shops, restaurants or cafes. I've always been disappointed with this state for not expanding on this great little area... instead choosing to use our tax money to try to revitalize run-down city ghettos from the same era (the Wilmington Riverfront & Ship's Tavern area). The result is that as cool as Old New Castle is, it is very small and uneventful.

Thank you both for your information! It sounds like the best place to live in Old New Castle is in the historic district. But what about the Ashton Condominiums. They look nice and well-kept, but are they a safe place to live? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated!

Eye,
Ashton condominiums are okay, BUT, the surrounding area is crime ridden. Not just nuisance crimes I'm talking serious violent crimes. Right down the street off of Wilton Blvd, is a Walmart, armed and strong armed robberies are not uncommon. Across the street is Maple Square Townhouses, known for drug sales. Where there are drug sales there are crimes of violence (shootings). Unfortunately, the criminals don't stick to their neighborhoods. Right next to Ashton is Wilton Park, which attracts the undesirables that would wander through Ashton (think crimes of opportunity).

I hate to sound pessimistic because there are nice places in New Castle County.

Thank you, Baconator! It sounds like it's not a good idea to get a condo in Ashton. It's a shame too, because they look like nice condos and they're at decent prices. If anyone else would like to add on that, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

If you are willing to rent an apartment or studio, you can probably find something in Old New Castle. Previous posters are all right on the money. Old New Castle is a gem in the middle of...er, a not-so-gem. The New Castle area is generally considered to be an undesirable and unsafe place to live although there are exceptions. As mentioned, the problem with Old New Castle (besides the real estate prices) is that it is not a fully serviced area. To buy groceries, etc, you will need drive elsewhere.

Two other things to mention - if you don't have off-street parking, then parking is a problem. And, the major roadways all around Old New Castle are all heavy traffic areas, especially at rush hour times. There is really no escaping it.

Why not take a weekend trip down? Where in PA are you? At the time I met my husband, I lived north of Philly and he lived in an apartment in Old New Castle. It was a little over an hour drive.

I've lived in NewCastle for 19 years now and have not had any problems. Yes there is crime all around and some areas are worse than others. This is a quaint town and my wife and I love it here and have lived in more afluent areas where crimes occured right up the street or a few houses away.
There is an apt. complex near me that is well maintained and seems very quiet. Deemer's Landing and it was just built not that long ago.
