Possible Move To Newark Area
Hello and good afternoon everyone!
I have received a job offer in Newark and would love to hear all about Newark. I just read a thread on the last page that said Newark is full of crime and a hige University Town. IS this true I know it is home to University of Delaware but the person said allot of robberies and burgularies.
I live in Lexington, KY and we are a college town but knock on wood we have crime but we are not prone to much crime here and we live across from University of Kentucky.
I know there is no sales tax but what is the catch because the state needs to make money some how. Also we are planning to rent so as long I am within 30 minutes of Newark I will be happy to commute.
If I did not make it evident please tell me about the cost of living as well.
Thank you in advance for all the help in my questions!

I've lived one block from UD for the last 30 years and have never had any problems. There was one highly publicized off-campus murder two years ago, but otherwise its a very safe place.

Hello. I have lived in Delaware my whole life. I just moved to Florida several months ago for a job transfer. You are not wanting to commute more than 30 minutes to work. There are plenty of places to live outside of Newark. Try the Prices Corner area, Newport... If money is not a problem, than Hockessin or Pike Creek.
I would suggest just driving down Kirkwood Highway from Newark towards Wilmington and start looking at areas. There are a lot of nice developments off of Kirkwood Highway. That is a main artery.
Good luck!

one more thing. try to stay away from using i-95 on a daily basis to and from work if you are going at the normal 8-5 hours. it has really become congested lately and is more like a parking lot than an interstate. it is good for traveling on at other times but not when people are coming and going to work.
as for the cost of living, it is decent. if you are in the medical field, you will probably do well. car insurance, home insurance is not too bad. property taxes are good.
not sure if you are looking to rent or buy, but i would suggest going on craigslist.com and seeing what is there. i rented my house on that site. seems like a good place to look.
good luck.

I want to say thank you to everyone on City Data Delaware Forum for the help. I thought at first this would be a dead thread but this past week it has been given life so thank you.
I want to live in Newark and do not mind paying a premium for this but what I want is a Mercedez's style apartment complex basically meaning all the bells and whistles and newer complex like constrcuted after the millienium but mid nineties are fine. I think I will based in downtown off main street close to Route 273 is where the office should be.
Also I will driving from Kentucky to Delaware in March so I have used Map Quest but I know I-95 is a nightmare any tips on driving up?
Thank you,
Paul

since i never rented an apartment and do not live there now, i dont really know of any places. however, i did go on craigslist.com and found some luxury apartments in bear off of rt 40 and 7. not far from where you would be working. the website is www.brandywinewoods@riverstoneres.com. it said it was $960.00 for 1-2 bedroom. i know nothing about these. they must be new because i dont remember seeing them. rt 40 and rt 7 are also major roads with everything you will need-grocery stores, restaurants, clothing stores, gas stations.....

Moving to Delaware
I graduated from U of D which is the University located in Down town Newark. Yes it is a college town but I think that makes it a very safe town because there is always people out and about. The town itself is small so there is plenty to rent in the outskirts away from the University in more family type areas. I think Newark is a great place and I don't know why anyone would say the crime rate is high. There is all sorts of list of apartments and private rentals available on the net to see what fits best.

Yeah, so far I've been in Newark for about a year.. No crime on me to speak of, and I've found just about everything I need or would want on Main St. or the local area. There's even decent NY-style pizza!
I would just recommend finding a place at least 300 yards away from a train track. The trains run night and day, at least 7-8 per day, 2am on a Sunday is not unusual.
