Where they pay correctional officers 91K to start, where the mayor up in North jersey was convicted of a crime and will receive his full pension and health beneifts. So what do legistators do on NJ?, they take away Lincolns birthday as a holiday! LOL what a bunch of idiots.
I have no psychological rationale thoughtful answer for you other than taxes.Go DE GO!

The sales tax issue IS a HUGE ONE.
I didn't realize how spoiled I was growing up in DE to not have to pay sales tax. Yes, when traveling abroad or out of town I had to pay, but that was no big deal--it was all just part of the vacation package.
BUT, when I left and had to pay as a way of life, it took a bit of getting used to--kinda. Whenever anyone asked me how much sales tax we pay in my state, I'd be like I don't pay attention to those things. I just pay the final bill--not used to caring about such things.

I moved to Philadelphia 2 years ago. I got laid off, and I'm here under duress until I start my new career back in Philadelphia.
I grew up on 4th Street/Little Italy, and now I'm staying with my mother in Stanton until I get off unemployment and start my new career later this month.
Cool down on the contention, babe

Hi Joe,
Sorry you took my curiosity the wrong way. I have been reading your post and they are extremely informative. You obviously know a lot about every inch of DE. Honestly, I'm impressed when I read your posts.
They are well written too.
your comment "maybe I will live in De when I'm older" just threw me off since I thought you did live in DE.
I"m sure if you were in my position, you may have thought the same thing. Actually, I thought it but dismissed it until Drjef mentioned this.
No harm was meant, just wanted to know. Someone mention about taking posts the wrong way. I know I have in the past and I"m sure some have taken my post the wrong way. In fact, I know they have. Go to the NASCAR thread and you will see how I got blasted.
There were a few others too. I told someone with a legal problem to get in touch with judge judy and bajoombamboom.....another bunch of fireworks. LOL!!
Guess we all have our days.
But your okay joe and I do enjoy your post.

Considering the job market, the sales tax issue is not all that huge. Most people will be able to make more money in a state that is better off economically. That's why we moved. Northern DE is much better than Sussex Co. We pay sales tax now, but we pay no state income tax and we're making a lot more money. Southern DE is a great place to retire and for people on a fixed income, the sales tax thing is a plus.

I've been around the world--a few times over--and I must respectfully disagree that everything's the same all over and that it's what you do with your time. Sorry, but if there are no museums, theatres, cultural events, gourmet dining, etc your time is spent being BORED.

Well, you are about 20 minutes from Philadelphia. I went there on most weekends. Have you ever been? I will say it again, unless you're in NY, LA or maybe Chicago, there are only so many museums, and you can't walk between Baltimore and DC. I don't have a problem with someone wanting to leave Delaware, by all means have at it, I just think it's funny how you view it as boring. If you live in DC you'll be looking for a way out after a while. Seems to me you might be more content joining the military, that way you can see several cities and coutries throughout your service. From the sounds of it, you don't really want to plant roots anywhere. You're missing my point. I'm not saying that cities around the world are literally the same. I'm saying that when you live somewhere after a while everyone refers to their place as boring. I've been around the world too, and found that people say the same things. What I may think is exciting in Venice, Italy is commonplace to a resident there!

I would rate DE as rather boring, for me anyway. However, I have to say that having a rich availability of cultural resources doesn't necessarily make life not boring on a day to day basis. Until 14 months ago when I moved back to the US (and to DE for the first time in my life) I was living in London. We did go to theatre in the West End, which was absolutely an unmatched opportunity -- better than Broadway in terms of the opportunity to see people I love on the stage like Christian Slater and Kevin Spacey, to name two. However, it's not as if we went to the theatre, opera or ballet more than once every five months on average, I'd say. Most of my day to day interest came from my work and to some extent from my church. However, on weekday evenings I didn't feel like doing much of anything other than eating and kicking back at home, and on weekends the predominant entertainment was the pub, restaurants and in nice weather being outdoors. IME, you never take advantage of all the stuff any place has to offer, whether it's London, Manhattan, or Wilmington, DE. Truthfully, for me the biggest shortcoming of any place in DE, with the possible exception of Rehoboth Beach, is the absence of enough good but moderately priced restaurants and good bars. I do agree that the source of boredom is more often within oneself than in the external environment.

It is what you make out of it! Who cares why one leaves Delaware and another does not??? Honestly, if you are happy and content with living here then by all means enjoy the great first state, if you are not move!
I am looking to move and not because I do not like Delaware but that I want to explore other options and living styles. And guess what.... if I don't like my new location I will be surely moving back..

The responses in this thread has surprised me, considering that I know quite a few Marylanders, myself included, who look at our northern neighbors with envy.
