Forests in Delaware
How much forest is there in Delaware? On Google Earth, it looked like there is quite a bit but in small sections.

I'd say that's right, especially in northern New Castle County. However, there are woodlands in other parts of the state, as well. The woods of the Brandywine Valley, however, are especially beautiful and impressive owing to the steeply rolling quality of the topography. The forestation farther south is on coastal plain.

Though we don't necessarily recommend living in Kent County--depends on your work, interests, activities, age of children, etc.--there are some wonderful forested areas. I'll name one: Killens Pond State Park. It's about 20 minutes south of Dover, and though there are areas you may want to ignore, the trail around the lake, which is entirely wooded and has its share of hills is lovely at almost any time of year. Great place to walk your dog too.

doctorjef, that did sound ominous, didn't it? Well away from the lake, there's a waterpark that seems busy all summer, so probably a good destination for those with young ones, but not for people seeking the beauty and serenity of the lake trail. No problem, in any case, other than in the summer. Some of our most pleasant walks have been on winter days.

When I lived in Milford we went to Killens Pond pretty often. http://www.destateparks.com/kpsp/kpsp.htm In fact, we got a dog one time while we were walking around. We think someone had just dropped him off since no one answered our ads in the paper. He lived for many happy years after that with us. As a child we used to swim and row our rowboat in the lake. Thanks for reminding me about Killens Pond - I had forgotten all about it!
Another forest is one just off of Redden State forest between Milford and Georgetown off of route 113 in Sussex County. We camped in there when I was in Girl Scouts.

Hi folks,
I'd have to agree with other posters.. Killens Pond State Park has a lot to offer. Beautiful wooded areas, lots of "back to nature" for anyone seeking that sort of thing. Our son's scout pack has camped there, and the park hosted the Boy Scout Jamboree this past summer.
We've also been to the water park, another scout outing. Anniebleu is right... the water park can be quite crowded and hectic on a hot summer day. But when we were there, it seemed well staffed (lifeguards), and as a parent that was great to see.
Toobusytoday, glad to hear you have pleasant memories of times spent at Killens Pond!
Mary

I don't think anything in Northern New Castle Co. can be defined as a "forest," can it?
I always thought of a forest covering a larger area than the county could provide.

Actually, I'd tend to say "woods" or "woodlands". I don't think we have any sizeable areas in the state that could really properly be called forests.
