Hi all,

I am selling my car that's still registered in DE on my own, and I am wondering what I do with the license plate? Does it have to go to the new owner, or can I take it down? How is the new owner going to drive without a plate? Do I also need to notify DE DMV that I don't own the car anymore?

Thanks!

If the car still in DE. If the car is in DE and it's sold to someone in DE, the plate usually goes with it, but doesn't have to. The buyer can go to DMV and get plates...and a temp to get it home. Some people like to keep their plates. If the car is out of state, the same sort of applies. The buyer could use your valid DE plate to get to DMV and get plates of his own.

Personally, I would not give up the plates. It's not like the buyer can use them in another state. We moved to TN and this is what I did. Sold the car and kept the plate. It's hanging in the garage as a souvenir.

Hi rossc,

That's exactly what I want to do, keep the plate!! I am not in DE anymore. So I will have the buyer to go to DMV and get a temp. plate and give him the key?

This is great

I would think that if you are selling the car to someone outside of Delaware that they would have to register it in their state and get a temp tag.

Confirming - sold a car in 2007 to a Delaware resident. We both went to DMV together and were advised the plate stays with original owner. Unless officially transferred.

Actually, in DE it is customary for the plate to stay with the vehicle, but it doesn't have to. That's entirely up to the seller. The plate is transferred to the buyer when he registers the car at DMV.
