A lot of people from NJ move to Delaware just to get away from the high taxes there.

We have a lot of transplanted New Jersey people here in southern Delaware.

The major problem is that NJ people move here and want it to be just like home, it isn't!

They don't call it lower, slower Delaware for nothing!

I wouldn't think that Sussex County is that different from a lot of South Jersey. For a more urban atmosphere there New Castle County, which still has extremely low property taxes relative to NJ, PA, and MD. Sussex County has a very inequitable property tax situation. Apparently they haven't reappraised older homes in years, so many valuable older homes have unbelievably low property taxes (like in the 3 digit range), while newer properties seem to have much higher tax, even when they aren't worth as much as the older properties.

I'm talking about Sussex County, Delaware -- our southernmost county. DE has three counties: New Castle in the north, Kent in the middle, and Sussex in the south. Sussex overall has the lowest property taxes and New Castle the highest. Yet in a 500K house in New Castle County, my taxes were still less than $2,200 for 2007.

i moved from new york to virginia then to delaware. sussex has alot going for it. plenty of rural area. but also plenty to do and lots of shopping, in the rehoboth or milford area if you are located along rt 1. not much single family homes under $200k but plenty in the $225-$325 range. note: mobiles are generally on rented land that can cost $400-$600 a month additional. fee simple is when you own the land - look for this. again, all the best with the tough decision making process facing you. jim

Marye711:

If we know why you want to move, then we may be able to tell you if Delaware could be a good alternative. So to that end, if you could elaborate what you are looking for or what you are trying to get away from posters will chime in with their own perceptions or knowledge to shed some light.
