Smile Neighborhoods to rent an apartment in/near Wilmington

My wife and I are young (we think 29 is young...you might differ!) professionals without kids looking to rent an apartment in Wilmington, DE. I will drive for work to Lansdale, Pa and my wife will take the Amtrak from downtown Wilmington to Baltimore.

We are looking to rent a 2-bedroom apartment/townhome in the $1500 range (can go up to $2,000). The must-have would be:
(1) not more than 15-20 min drive from downtown Wilmington Amtrak station
(2) SAFE SAFE SAFE

We enjoy shopping and eating out a LOT and it would be great to have some nice stores/restaurants/bars in the area. Either a quiet classy neighborhood or a young, vibrant one would be fine. North of Wilmington would be ideal since I'd be driving north for work but doesn't have to.

We would greatly appreciate suggestions for neighborhoods/apartments. In some of the forums, Trolley square and Bellefonte popped up. Any thoughts on those or other areas?

We have never lived in the area and really depend on all of you for guidance. So PLEASE help!

Chamon..:

Since neither of you will be working in the City of Wilmington and to avoid paying City wage tax you may give a thought to not choosing to live in Wilmington proper. Although your wife's drive to the train stn. would be shorter if you lived in wilmington. To counter-act that I suggest living north of the City but closer to a bus route so that she does not even have to drive (unless she works other than normal 9-5) to the train stn. and avoid the expense of parking every day.

Greenville Place Apartments in Greenville (just north of the City of Wilmington proper) might be a good choice for you. Should be in your price range, good part of town.
