Good to see people posting in the DE forum again.
True. Very happy to see this forum active again.

Now if only a few more Delawareans would respond to my Utility Costs question ... lol.

Be careful with those UCR stats. For the reasons I referenced in an earlier post, there are issues of skewed data from size, timing and samping that make the stats for small states questionable.

Armx said it best with, "Who would in their right mind think that NH, VT and Maine would be # 1,2, and 3 on the crime list?"

Basically yes, they average out the amount of crimes based on the size of population then come out with an average (Per Capita).

NYC is a good example. Since there are over 8 million residents 400-600 murders puts NYC in the top 10 safest biggest city list. While Philly has like 1.5 million people and has the same amount of murders lol.

Now when you don’t measure up to a population of 75,000 people then it starts to get blown out of proportion. East St Louis, North Charleston SC, Myrtle Beach SC, Opa-Locka FL are all good examples. They all have an average of 6-30 murders which surpasses just about any murder rate in the entire USA. But is that really accurate????? Think about it.

I'm sure if there is real danger, there will be some kind of warning!

Yes, but that robot is inept and not very good at actually protecting one from the dangers of Planet Delaware.

Being relatively new to DE (as I have posted before, we moved to central Kent Co about 1-1/2 yrs ago), I have to add my two cents worth to this thread. As others have posted, I do not believe DE is anymore dangerous than most other places we have lived. Over the years, we have lived in Va Beach, Long Island, Ohio, and central NC.

Another thing that, IMHO, factors into the data, is the crazy economic time we are living in. As has been proven statistically, when the economy is upside down, crime (in all forms) increases. I suppose that is proof of the theory of desperate people will do desperate things...

One other thing, as again, has been posted, is too much access to too little true information. A few weeks ago, there was rumor going around that there would be a gang initiation shooting at the Camden Walmart. As I heard it, by local folks waiting in the pharmacy line, it was to be a random shooting that night of a female shopper. Later, I heard on the Philly news (we have satellite) that this "alert" was going out nationwide! Perhaps an attack on Walmart, who knows?

As a parent, with kids ranging in age from 12 to 21, this sort of thing will catch my attention. But back to the topic... I/we do not feel any less safe here than anywhere else. In fact, I am more afraid to walk in my in-law's "upper crust" Long Island neighborhood after dark. Yet the crime statistics for their town reports a VERY low rate of activity. Hmmmm.....

Mary
