Veterinarians in Bear/Glasgow area
My husband and I just moved to the area and are looking for a new vet for our dog and two cats. We are in Newark near the Kohl's on Rte 40. Can anyone recommend a vet in the area?

I use VCA Glasgow in Peoples Plaza. Both vets are excellent; however, they are pricey. Dr. Bob is a big kid and the pets love him. Dr. Rob is a little more laid back but very conscientious. They both do follow-up calls after visits. VCA Newark is both a regular clinic and the emergency. They are also very good. We used Lums Pond Animal Hospital for years with our lab, but the owner, who was a practicing vet for about 30 years, thought Lola was pregnant when she was actually spayed. I did not like Red Lion Vet, because he acted like I was stupid when I took our cat in. Anyway, the biggest shock will be the fees if you come from an area that just charged for treatment. I had never paid an exam fee until moving to Delaware, but that appears to be business as usual here. Let me know if you have specific questions.

MY PERSONAL OPINION - but i'd stay away from VCA clinics. They are a huge nationwide corporation and hugely expensive. I have a good friend who sold his veterinary clinic to VCA so he could semi-retire, and he just could not stand their practices, and only worked for them for a few months after that before he quite (and moved out of state because he had signed an agreement that he wouldn't work anywhere else in the area).

Ambull, do you have any recommendations for a non-VCA vet to use?
SXM, thanks for your reply! I've never paid exam fees either.. sounds like I'm in for some sticker shock!

I have a friend who uses Jim Berg. He also is on WDEL radio. Both Lums Pond and Red Lion are independent. I can only say that I have used several vets in the area and VCA Glasgow and Newark are some of the best. All charge exorbitant fees. With that said, most businesses today have non-compete clauses. That has nothing to do with the quality of care that your pet will receive. Dr. Bob Flanigan and his wife own the franchise for VCA Glasgow. Dr. Rob Teti, who is also an associate, actually has an animal rescue in Chester County, PA. I was very hesitant to switch to VCA, but they came with excellent references from personal friends.

Agree. Didn't mean to imply that there was anything wrong with the non-compete clause. I was just trying to point out that the "cold and corporate" way that VCA ran things was so bad that this veterinarian actually quit his job and moved out state to get away. After he left, I stuck around for a year, and I watched my vet bills double, and so did the incompetency of the Vets who came in to replace all of the Vets that left this practice soon after the original owner left.
I'm not saying Glasgow VCA is like this but i am jaded towards VCA now.
Anyway, all this is not helping the OP.
Jdani06,
I found the following online:
Animal Veterinary Center
Delaware veterinarians
160 Bear Christiana Rd, Bear, Delaware 19701
Bay Animal Hospital
Small animal and exotic veterinary care.
3891 South Dupont Park Way, Townsend, Delaware
Branmar Veterinary Hospital
2006 Marsh Rd, Wilmington, Delaware 19810
VCA Glasgow Animal Hospital
650 Peoples Plaza, Newark, Delaware 19702
VCA Kirkwood Animal Hospital
1501 Kirkwood Hwy, Newark, Delaware 19711
Lantana Veterinary Center
Lantana Square Shopping Center, Hockessin, DE 19707
Limestone Veterinary Hospital
Limestone & Brackenville Rds, Hockessin, DE 19707
Lums Pond Animal Hospital
3052 Wrangle Hill Road, Bear, DE 19701
VCA Newark Animal Hospital
1360 Marrows Rd, Newark, Delaware 19711
Talleyville Veterinary Hospital
3001 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Delaware 19803
Windcrest Animal Hospital
3705 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, Delaware 19805
Winwood Jennifer DVM 107 Albe Drive Suite A,
Newark, DE 19702
Can anyone vouch for any of the above mentioned Vets?
I also found this link with what looks like every Vet in Delaware. There are a few in Middletown that I'd be interested in looking into. It's funny. There is probably as many vets in Delaware as the entire county in Jersey that I come from

Animal Veterinary Center is Jim Berg's facility. A friend switched to him last year from Windcrest and she is very pleased. Windcrest is supposed to be excellent but extremely expensive. It is also far for the OP to go. Same for Talleyville and Branmar (both North Wilmington), and the same for Limestone, Lantana, and Bay. Years ago Middletown Veterinary Hospital was recommended to me, but it is really too far. If I am traveling to those areas, I might as well go back to Philly where they did not charge to walk in the door. White Clay isn't too far for the OP and I have never heard anything about them. Unfortunately, finding a good vet is like finding a good family doctor--trial and error.

Thanks, they may be worth a try for me - and not too far.

I take my 3 dogs to Lums Pond - all the doctors there have been nice EXCEPT Dr Ford - she is a mean woman (IMHO) but treats the dogs good (all docs there really love the animals they encounter)
Dr Gaska, is our favorite - she has terriers and loves our schnauzers - but doesn't work all the time
