Hi Magilla43,
I just scanned the last 2 pages of posts, and want to welcome you to DE! From what I read, your family is moving here from Louisiana for a job at Del State, right? And you have a teenager, if I am not mistaken.
As I have posted elsewhere, we moved here from NC almost 2 years ago, and settled in Kent County just south of Dover. We targeted a school district, as we have a teenage son with autism, and have been quite happy with our decision. We are in the Caesar Rodney school district, which I highly recommend. Since you are coming to DE soon to seek out housing, be sure to check that information.
As Summering and others have mentioned, there are lots of things to do for those that look. Surprisingly, for such a small state, a LOT of things go on here! We have yet to want for things to do, in fact don't seem to have enough time to explore everything we'd like. For your teenager, fitting in at a new school should not be the issue it might be in other places. With the military influence in this area, kids move in and move out quite frequently. I grew up a military child, and am quite familiar with that cycle.
Please send me a direct message and I will share our personal contact info. I would love to catch up with you when you come to the Dover area in June. Any questions I might be able to help you with, feel free to ask.
Good luck! Mary

Hello Mary,
Thank you for your warm welcome to Delaware! We are looking at homes in Kent County and other places as well. Our real estate broker is wonderful and is showing us properties in several counties. Our daughter is so excited about transferring to a new high school and it's good to know that she probably won't be the only new student this fall. You mentioned you have a son with autism. Just so happens that my Master's degree is in Special Education Supervision! Small world. I'd love to chat with you. I did sent you a friend's note. Not sure exactly how this works, but let me know what else I need to do to contact you directly. Oh, yes, we are moving to Delaware because my husband accepted a position as an academic dean at Delaware State.
I promise to chat again soon. Getting ready for our home inspection tomorrow! Gotta run!
Take care,
Lynda

Magilla, I hope you aren't really looking at "several counties" in Delaware since there are only 3 in the whole state. I (ahem!) have lived in all of them. Just stay below the canal and you will be in commuting distance.
To directly contact a poster, click on their screen name. You will then see a drop down menu and the second choice is "send a direct message to poster". Click on that and you can then send a private message. I think you and your family will love Delaware. I'm glad I grew up there.

Interesting, I was brought up as a "Dupont Brat", the family spent almost 2 years in Delaware, Newark specifically, out of all the places Dupont sent us, Newark was our favorite, friendly people, nice neighborhoods with a sense of community, draft root beer, good schools, proximity to a myriad of other things.

It actually states nothing of the sort. Simply stating that the location is central to what others believe are necessary to enjoy a cultural life. The constant posts on this and other sites by people who are seemly searching for DE's cultural benefits would seem to indicate as much.
Having lived in the panhandle of FL, the tidewater area of VA, SE region of Canada, South Philadelphia and mostly in Northern DE (native) with a fair amount of traveling, I'm quite content and partial to this area.
And, yes, only the boring get bored. But that is a sign of the times. Many of us grew up entertaining ourselves in a sandbox, backyard or just a bedroom. We did not have the luxury of constant TV programming, video games or many of the other mind-numbing diversions available to today's "youth".

Our family just arrived this evening in Dover for week of house hunting with our Keller Williams Broker. As it turns out all the homes we're considering are in Kent County although we were considering New Castle County too. One noticeable plus, the weather is cooler here then Louisiana, for that I am grateful. You must live life where your journey takes you, if only for a little while.

Hi Magilla, Hope you are enjoying your house hunting adventure. Sorry about the dreary weather, it is usually bright and sunny here. We have had lots of rain so everything is nice and green for you. You are at the right place at the right time. There are many who have their dreams on home ownership in our fine state but just can't make the move until their homes sell. How fortunate you really are.
Hope that you and your family enjoy the area, lots to see and do. Not sure what you are looking for in your new home but right now is the perfect time as there are plenty of great family neighborhoods in the area with homes on the market.
As a three year transplant from PA, I can honestly tell you that we are extremely happy with our choice to relocate here. We are in Magnolia, in Caesar Rodney school district. One development that is a must see, in my opinion, is The Orchards. I'm not sure how they do it, but all the lawns are nicely manicured. It is obvious that people in the community take pride in their homeownership. I posted on a previous thread about our community in JL but I don't think we have any resales at this time. Our builder might have a speck home or two but your realtor can advise you on that. Irish Hill has is another desirable area.
If you do zero in on a specific neighborhood and need some advise before signing the dotted line, ask away. Someone here may be able to steer you in the right direction.

Hello PA!
Thanks for the warm welcome. We're here in Dover staying at the Residence Inn not from Delaware State University and the weather is beautiful! We thought it was going to be overcast and rainy all week! What a change from the hot, sticky, humid weather in Louisiana. We love it! We spent the day house hunting with our broker and guess what? We placed an offer of a home in Magnolia, DE! What a small world. In fact, I just went to the Caesar Rodney High School web page to check it out for our daughter. Yes, the lawns and yards are so beautiful and we think we found the perfect house for our family. We're waiting to see if the Builder accepted our offer. We're exhausted, and yes there were areas that had were no available homes for sale, but we took a quick peek anyway from the outside. Now, it's a wait and see game. I'll write again soon. Maybe we'll catch up with each other in Magnolia! LOL! :-)
