A small Eastern Shore MD town that I saw pictures of, which I believe is in the lower Delmarva, is Oxford, MD. Extremely picturesque, although I don't think there's much there besides the houses (noteworthy in themselves). It's really a village of about 800 souls. Anyway, seemed a worthwhile place to visit.

I wonder if Salisbury, MD is of any interest. For excusions from the DE beaches, it seems that the eastern shore of Maryland is one option. Of course, there is the ferry between Lewes and Cape May, which are both tremendously picturesque towns, though Lewes is the more historic if smaller.

About 10 years ago, I planned a short trip for 3 or 4 days with my children and my parents (at the time), as soon as school got out in late June. Originally, we thought of the New Jersey Shore... but that idea went by the wayside... esp. after looking at the prices of lodging at the time and there is something about having to pay to get on a public Beach that just turns me Off! So, we decided to go somewhere new and figured that Delaware wasn't that much farther (from Upstate NY), so we went for it! That started a yearly trip to Rehoboth Beach for many years until My Dad died a few years ago. Actually, the whole coast from Lewes to Assateague in Md is all very nice and has a lot to offer in a relatively short distance. You can do Ocean City and any Delaware Beach all in the same day if you wish. The people and businesses in the area are all very friendly and hospitable, and coming from the Land of Taxes here in NY,... I always got a thrill from having no Sales Tax when you go shopping....making Outlet shopping in RB very appealing! I have wonderful memories and would recommend that area to live in or to vacation, to anyone. OC is definately more commercial and RB is more quaint. Ultimately I don't think you don't have to choose, just enjoy them all. I agree with everything I have read so far and I hope you enjoy it there as much as my family and I have.

My personal opinion is that Salisbury isn't that interesting. There's quite a bit more crime and poverty there than you would expect. Now, if you're downstate, Frawley Stadium is an okay place to catch a baseball game with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Baltimore Orioles Single A team. There's a decent sized mall there as well on route 13, however, I wouldn't suggest making the trip purely for shopping. For an older city, much of it lakes in charm. That having been said, there are some good areas, just not as many as you'd expect. Try Cambridge instead.

Actually, I found the women in Delaware to be quite nice and charming, the derogatory term, I suspect, is not founded in this case......Oh wait!!! OOPS!!! I believe I read the original post incorrectly----MY BAD!

We had planned to go to Rehoboth today with the kids, but I noticed as we got closer that Ocean City was so close, so we chose to go to OC instead. It was a lot of fun. The kids really enjoyed the beach (free) and rides. I thought it was a great family day. It is not as good as the Jersey Shore, but it was still fun. It was not crowded at all either, considering it was Memorial Day weekend. The Jersey Shore is a mob scene this weekend with all the Bennies.

There's plenty to do in Ocean City. It's very family oriented as far as I could tell. I was just there a week ago but you might just want to be close to it to enjoy it but not live there by still chosing Delaware. I can't imagine what it's like to live in OC (traffic/crowds) between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

I was thinking the exact same thing before I read your post!

Those flies with the green eyes, they will sting the living hell out of you and won't give up till they do, they will literally chase you down!

But have fun if you go!
